Florida State is nearly through the midpoint of fall camp, and Mike Norvell says the Seminoles are still in solid shape physically as preseason work rolls on.
The team has gotten through 10 of its 18 practices before shifting into game week for New Mexico State, and despite the usual wear and tear that comes with a physical camp, Norvell said Sunday night that the roster has avoided anything that looks like a long-term problem.
“We've been pretty clean just on the bumps and bruises that we've had. I don't think that anything at this point is going to stretch into the season," Norvell said. "Obviously had a few guys that got a little banged up today, but we'll see exactly where that goes."
He also pointed to the extra scrimmage work as part of the plan to keep bodies fresh heading toward the opener.
"It does allow a little bit more time to get any of the things that take a week or two weeks just to be able to get back and ready to go as we get into game situations," Norvell added. "Our guys, they've been practicing really hard. Our practices during the week, they're fast and physical."
A handful of players are still being monitored. Senior running back Tre Wisner has missed both preseason scrimmages because of a minor injury. Redshirt senior linebacker Mikai Gbayor and sophomore wide receiver Jayvan Boggs were limited when camp opened.
True freshman linebacker Izayia Williams has also been dealing with an issue after previously being fully cleared last month following an ACL injury that ended his senior season of high school. Norvell said he expects Williams back soon.
"Izayia Williams, he was out tonight," Norvell said. "Expecting him to get back into action in this next week or so. A guy that I think, as a young player, is going to have an opportunity to impact."
Florida State is also taking a cautious approach with a couple of its top playmakers. Samuel Singleton Jr. and Ousmane Kromah wore non-contact jerseys Sunday, though neither is known to be dealing with any limitations.
The Seminoles are set to practice for the 11th time of preseason on Tuesday, with Wisner’s status still unclear.
