Mike Norvell Reveals What He Loves Before FSU Scrimmage

Mike Norvell's strategic focus and rising quarterback competition set the stage for FSU's pivotal spring scrimmage evaluation.

Florida State football is cranking up the intensity as they dive into spring practices, gearing up for their first scrimmage. With over 50 new players on the roster, these scrimmages will be crucial for the coaching staff to assess the fresh talent.

Quarterback Ashton Daniels, a transfer from Auburn, is stepping up to the plate, but rising sophomore Kevin Sperry is ready to challenge him. Both quarterbacks are eager to show their skills, and the competition is heating up.

Head Coach Mike Norvell is pushing the Seminoles hard as they return from spring break. The focus is on mental toughness, with a heavier emphasis on installations and third-down scenarios as they prepare for the Saturday scrimmage.

"I like where we're at," Norvell shared after Tuesday's practice. "Saturday is showtime.

I want them to play smart and fast, showing their physicality and relentless drive. This week, we’re turning up the heat."

This scrimmage is the first of three planned for the offseason. With no spring game on the schedule, these sessions are the primary way for the coaching staff to evaluate the new faces in a game-like environment.

The quarterback position will be a focal point. Daniels is the favorite to start, but Sperry’s flashes of brilliance last year mean he’s not out of the running. Norvell is pleased with their progress, emphasizing the importance of production and consistency.

"We grade everything," Norvell explained. "It’s about showing confidence, rhythm, and precision. Both guys are investing time mentally, and now it’s about the physical consistency."

The quarterbacks will face a tough test against Tony White's revamped defense. Defensive edge Rylan Kennedy, a transfer from Texas A&M, is ready to make an impact in White’s 3-3-5 scheme.

"No overthinking," Kennedy advises. "During the scrimmage, I’ll be working hard-getting to the QB, playing the run, doing it all."
