Florida State’s quarterback situation has reached the point where Mike Norvell is no longer dressing it up.
After the Seminoles fell to SMU in Week 1 and slipped to 1-1, Norvell made it clear that Ashton Daniels has not been delivering enough in games, even if he’s shown flashes in practice. That split between what happens on the field during the week and what shows up under the lights has become a real problem for Florida State, and Norvell didn’t hide from it in his weekly press conference.
Daniels’ loss to SMU dropped him to 6-21 as a starting quarterback, and the numbers from the game told the story. Florida State’s offense never found a rhythm, the quarterback play was a major reason why, and the final sequence only sharpened the criticism.
On the drive that could have put the Seminoles in position to win with a little more than six minutes left, Norvell said Daniels should have pulled the ball on the first play. Instead, the possession ended in a sack, and SMU later marched down for the game-winning kick.
The struggles were obvious throughout the night. Daniels had just 63 passing yards with a few minutes remaining and finished with 125 passing yards overall. He did provide some value as a runner, but Florida State already has Ousmane Kromah and Samuel Singleton Jr. in the backfield, which makes heavy quarterback rushing less of a necessity.
Norvell had already taken aim at Daniels after the Week 0 game against New Mexico State, though those comments came wrapped in praise for what the quarterback helped the team accomplish in the win. This time, the message was sharper. Norvell said he has seen Daniels execute the offense at speed in practice, but that it hasn’t carried over when the bullets are flying in a live game.
If Florida State decides to make a change, the options behind Daniels are not exactly reassuring. Malachi Marshall and Kevin Sperry sit behind him on the depth chart, and neither has created much confidence so far. Marshall completed 49.2% of his passes at the FCS level in 2024, while Sperry has not shown clear signs of development.
There’s also the bigger issue hanging over any possible quarterback switch: the offensive line. Florida State did show some improvement against SMU, but the unit is still a work in progress. Daniels has at least dealt with broken protection before, and another quarterback could be walking into the same mess with less experience to absorb it.
The larger lesson from all of this lands back on Norvell and Florida State’s roster-building choices. The pursuit of Daniels in the transfer portal has become a warning sign about how NIL money gets spent, especially at quarterback.
