Florida State’s Mike Norvell is back in the kind of conversation every coach wants to avoid.
On3 placed the Seminoles head coach on its preseason hot-seat list, a nod to just how much pressure is building around Norvell heading into the 2026 season. The reasoning is hard to miss: Florida State has stumbled badly in conference play, gone 3-13 in the ACC over the past two seasons, and is trying to recover from a 5-7 campaign that many believed would end with a coaching change.
On3 reported that Florida State did consider moving on from Norvell before deciding to keep him for 2026. That decision didn’t erase the scrutiny, though. Andy Staples noted that Norvell’s buyout, estimated at $45.6 million after the 2026 season, is a major reason a change wasn’t made sooner.
The bigger issue, at least in the eyes of On3, is whether Florida State has matched the kind of support its rivals are putting behind their programs. Staples wrote that the Seminoles’ roster spending sits in the middle of the ACC and lags behind several of the teams they’re expected to line up against this season, including Alabama, Florida, Miami and Clemson.
“It’s fair to say that Norvell was not afforded the same resources a coach would get if his donor base/administration was more confident in him,” Staples wrote. “Florida State’s roster spend falls near the middle of the ACC, putting it far below 2026 non-conference opponents Alabama and Florida and well below conference foes Miami and Clemson.”
Florida State has already tried to reset the picture. The Seminoles overhauled the roster through the transfer portal and made multiple coaching staff changes after last season, clear signs the program believes it has taken steps toward getting back into the ACC race.
Still, the margin for error is thin after back-to-back disappointing years. Norvell enters the season with the kind of outside attention that can hang over a program until results finally start to speak for themselves. And if Florida State doesn’t turn quickly, this could be one of the defining storylines around the Seminoles by November.
