Fall camp is done, game week is here, and Florida State still hasn’t given anyone a clean look at what it plans to put on the field Saturday, August 29 against New Mexico State at Doak Campbell Stadium.
Mike Norvell has chosen not to release a depth chart for the Week 0 opener, even with the Seminoles entering the game as a 30.5-point favorite at home, per FanDuel Sportsbook. After back-to-back seasons of 7-17, that decision has only added another layer of irritation for a fanbase that has already burned through most of its patience.
The frustration is not limited to Week 0, either. In his first game-week press conference of the season, Norvell said he will not be releasing depth charts during game weeks at all this year. That’s a sharp break from standard practice, and it comes off as the kind of move a coach makes when he is thinking too hard about every edge, real or imagined.

There’s not much mystery to be gained here. Norvell has already identified Ashton Daniels as his starting quarterback, and by the time SMU arrives in Tallahassee for a highly anticipated Week 1 ACC opener, Rhett Lashlee and his staff will have seen plenty of Florida State’s preferred offensive line, its running back rotation, and its usual personnel combinations on defense.
That’s what makes the whole thing feel so unnecessary. If the goal is to keep SMU guessing, then Florida State would have to hide so much in Week 0 that it would give up the very point of playing a Week 0 game: working out the kinks left over from fall camp. Norvell is not likely to go that far, which leaves the decision looking like nothing more than a show of secrecy for its own sake.
The bigger issue is what it does to the relationship with the fanbase. Norvell has already spent the goodwill he built during the 13-0 run in 2023, and the irritation around him has only grown. Even the administration appears to be in a similar place after an offseason with limited investment and a massive buyout looming.
If the coach’s point is that “guys know where they are,” then the move becomes even harder to explain. Releasing a depth chart would not hand out some devastating advantage to the opponent, especially not against New Mexico State. It would, however, give the fans something tangible and keep the program from looking like it is hiding behind unnecessary drama.
Instead, Norvell has turned it into theatre. And with wins hard to come by, it’s the kind of theatre that only deepens the split between him and the people watching.
