The post-Week 1 coaches’ poll handed out a few rankings that are going to leave some teams irritated, and Louisville might have the cleanest gripe of the bunch.
Ole Miss dropped just one spot, from 10th to 11th, after beating AP No. 24 Louisville by a field goal in a neutral-site game. That result came in a week where LSU’s blowout of Clemson clearly carried more weight, but the Rebels still wound up behind teams that handled Missouri State and UTEP in their openers.
That’s the part that stands out. Ole Miss scheduled a real test, played a tight game, and still got nudged backward while other teams were being rewarded for lighter work.
Florida State has an even steeper climb back into respectability after the opening week. The Seminoles became a target of plenty of jokes, but the reaction may be harsher than the performance deserved.
SMU, a Playoff team two years ago, was favored by a field goal and won by a field goal. Florida State’s defense also forced four turnovers and, for stretches, looked capable of narrowing the gap against a good SMU team.
It’s no surprise Florida State didn’t crack the top 25. But getting no votes at all, while sitting below UNLV and Clemson, feels like a strong overcorrection.
Oregon’s slide is another ranking that invites a second look. The Ducks were pushed from second to sixth after a surprising Week 1 battle with Boise State, a drop that sent them behind teams that beat FCS Tennessee State, Texas State and North Texas. That’s a pretty severe reaction for a game that was close.
And history gives that result some context. In 2024, Oregon was a big home favorite against Boise State and escaped 37-34 in Week 2.
Boise then won 12 games, while Oregon finished the regular season as the No. 1 team in college football. This could be another case where Boise was underestimated and a close early game against a strong opponent didn’t mean disaster for Oregon.
Louisville, though, seems to be the clearest example of the poll punishing a team for stepping into a serious Week 1 matchup. SMU barely beat unranked Florida State and jumped three spots.
Louisville barely lost to now-No. 11 Ole Miss and stayed out of the top 25.
If the coaches’ poll wants to reward teams for playing real games in September, Louisville probably deserved a little more credit.
