DJ Lagway Enters Transfer Portal: Could LSU and Lane Kiffin Be in the Mix?
The college football offseason is already heating up, and one of the first big dominoes has officially fallen. Florida quarterback DJ Lagway is heading to the transfer portal, according to a Monday report. After two seasons with the Gators, Lagway is looking for a fresh start-and there’s already buzz around where he could land next.
While Lagway’s 2025 campaign wasn’t exactly headline-grabbing-Florida limped to a 4-8 finish-he’s still a name that will attract attention from Power Four programs. He’s a former top recruit with dual-threat ability, and there’s a sense that with the right system, he could still tap into that high ceiling.
One program that’s already drawing attention in the Lagway sweepstakes? LSU.
And Lane Kiffin might’ve just added fuel to that fire with a subtle but telling move. On Monday morning, Kiffin reposted the report about Lagway entering the portal.
Now, a retweet doesn’t confirm anything, but in the world of college football-especially when it comes to a coach as plugged-in and media-savvy as Kiffin-it’s enough to raise eyebrows.
The connection may not be just social media smoke. Reports indicate that LSU is among the early programs to watch when it comes to Lagway’s next destination. Baylor and Miami are also reportedly in the mix, but LSU’s quarterback situation makes them an especially interesting fit.
With Garrett Nussmeier heading to the NFL, the Tigers are expected to be active in the portal market this winter. They’ve already added Michael Van Buren, who transferred in from Mississippi State before the 2025 season, but it’s clear that Kiffin wants depth-and possibly a new starter-at the position. Lagway, despite his up-and-down play at Florida, brings experience and athletic upside that could be intriguing for a team looking to reload quickly.
Lagway’s numbers from 2025 paint a mixed picture. He threw for 2,264 yards with 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, completing 63.2% of his passes.
On the ground, he added 136 yards and a touchdown on 71 attempts. Not elite production, but enough to suggest there’s something to work with-especially for a coach like Kiffin, who has a track record of getting the most out of quarterbacks.
One subplot to keep an eye on: if Lagway does end up in Baton Rouge, it could set up a familiar matchup. He faced Tennessee in both 2024 and 2025, with the Volunteers coming out on top both times.
Florida isn’t on Tennessee’s 2026 schedule, but LSU is-traveling to Knoxville in the second-to-last game of the regular season. That game was already going to be emotional, with Kiffin returning to Rocky Top.
Add in a potential Lagway vs. Vols Round 3, and the stakes get even higher.
For now, Lagway’s next stop is still up in the air. But with the portal wide open and quarterback-needy programs circling, don’t be surprised if his name stays in the headlines for a while. LSU might not be the only suitor-but they sure look like one worth watching.
