Gavin Sawchuk is on the move again.
The redshirt junior running back is officially entering the NCAA Transfer Portal after just one season with Florida State. It’s a significant development for the Seminoles, who leaned on Sawchuk more than any other running back in 2025. He arrived in Tallahassee after spring ball via the portal, following three seasons at Oklahoma, and quickly became a key piece in FSU’s backfield rotation.
Sawchuk’s production this season tells the story of a steady contributor. He finished second on the team in rushing yards (486), rushing touchdowns (8), and carries (109) - trailing only quarterback Tommy Castellanos in all three categories.
While he never broke the 100-yard mark in a single game, he came close with a 97-yard, two-touchdown performance against Kent State that stood as his most complete outing of the year. He also added value in the passing game, hauling in 13 receptions for 121 yards and a receiving touchdown.
Sawchuk started seven of Florida State’s 12 games in 2025, showing enough consistency and versatility to earn the staff’s trust throughout the season. But now, with one year of eligibility left, he’s looking for a new opportunity - and he’ll have options.
Before his time in Tallahassee, Sawchuk spent three seasons at Oklahoma, where he carved out a solid role in the Sooners’ backfield. The 5-foot-11, 209-pound back played in 23 games, starting 11, and totaled 977 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 176 carries. His breakout year came in 2023, when he earned honorable mention All-Big 12 recognition after putting up 744 yards and nine touchdowns over 12 games, including seven starts.
Now, Sawchuk enters the portal with a proven résumé and a full year of eligibility remaining - a valuable combination for programs looking to add experience and production to their backfield. The official transfer portal window for Division I players runs from January 2 to January 16, and unlike past years, there’s only one window for 2026. That means the clock is ticking for players like Sawchuk to find their next landing spot.
Wherever he ends up, Sawchuk brings a track record of reliability, power, and the kind of veteran presence that can elevate a running back room.
