FSU Lurks As Legendary QB Seeks HC Job

Russell Wilson is eyeing a return to his college roots as he contends for the head coaching role at NC State amidst a backdrop of big-name alumni interest and recent coaching changes.

Russell Wilson has interviewed for the North Carolina State head coaching job, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The former Seahawks quarterback, who spent three seasons at NC State from 2008-10 before transferring to Wisconsin for his final college year in 2011, is one of the most recognizable names tied to the opening. ESPN also reported Saturday that Philip Rivers, another NC State alum and an eight-time Pro Bowl quarterback, has “engaged in serious discussions” about coaching his alma mater.

NC State moved on from Dave Doeren on Oct. 24 after a 3-4 start. Doeren had been in charge for 14 seasons.

Wilson, 37, stepped away from the NFL in June after a 14-year career and is now working as a CBS Sports analyst on “The NFL Today” this fall.

His playing résumé is the kind that jumps off the page. In Seattle from 2012-21, Wilson became known for his deep ball and his ability to escape pressure, leading the Seahawks to two Super Bowl appearances and their first title. He also set franchise records, finished in the top four of AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year voting three times and won the NFL’s 2020 Walter Payton Man of the Year award.

Wilson’s career took a different turn after Seattle traded him to Denver in March 2022 in a blockbuster deal. The Seahawks used the draft capital from that trade to help build toward their 2025 Super Bowl-winning team, while Wilson’s path went the other direction.

Since leaving Seattle, he went 17-27 as a starter across three teams in four seasons. He was 11-19 in Denver from 2022-23, 6-5 with Pittsburgh in 2024 and 0-3 with the Giants in 2025 before first-round pick Jaxson Dart took over.

For his NFL career, Wilson finished with 46,966 passing yards, 353 touchdown passes and 114 interceptions. On the ground, he added 5,568 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns, making him the only player in league history to top both 40,000 passing yards and 5,000 rushing yards.

Florida State Fans Can Cross One More Name Off The Search List

Florida States coaching search has already produced plenty of noise, and one more prominent name can be crossed off the list. Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz addressed the speculation head-on ahead of his teams game against Texas, making clear that his attention is on preparing for the matchup and not on any opening in Tallahassee.

Drinkwitz has been at Missouri since 2020 and recently signed a six-year contract extension, which only added more context to the chatter around him. For now, though, the focus in Columbia is on Texas and the challenge of slowing Arch Manning, while Florida State keeps working through a search that still has plenty of moving parts. [Read more 🡒]

Florida States Rebuilt Roster Already Looks Ahead Of Schedule

Florida States mens basketball rebuild already looks like it may be moving faster than expected. The Seminoles opened the regular season with a 112-69 win over Florida A&M, and the early signs matched what they had shown in exhibitions: a group that looks comfortable, deep and ready to play at a higher level than many expected this soon.

Sebastian Rancik led the way with 25 points, Marcis Ponder added a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Anthony Robinson II chipped in 16 points as Luke Loucks second-season roster kept the pressure on from start to finish. Built through transfers and recruits, this group still has plenty of time to reveal its ceiling, but the first real game suggested the Seminoles may already be ahead of schedule. [Read more 🡒]

Boston College Has A Real Chance To Change This Seasons Story

Boston College has already shown enough this fall to make its final month worth watching, and the Eagles 4-4 record is a clear step forward from last seasons 2-10 finish. There is still work to do, but the improvement is real, and the schedule now turns into a proving ground with Florida State, Notre Dame, Syracuse and Miami still ahead.

For Florida State, that means a team with something to play for is coming into the matchup with momentum and a chance to keep changing the shape of its season. Bowl eligibility is still in reach if Boston College can handle the right games in this stretch, which gives this one a little extra edge for a Seminoles team trying to protect its own footing down the stretch.
