FSU Just Got A Reassuring Recruiting Win Fans Needed

Despite SEC interest, Florida State secures a key commitment from three-star linebacker Olrick Johnson III, aiming to stabilize their 2027 recruiting class.

Florida State has spent parts of this recruiting cycle trying to steady the ship after several pledges slipped away, and now the Seminoles have another commit making his stance clear.

Three-star linebacker Olrick Johnson III publicly shut down his recruitment over the weekend, reaffirming his commitment to Florida State after first choosing the Seminoles in early June. Johnson III picked FSU over Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, North Carolina State, and Nebraska.

That decision matters even more because LSU jumped into the mix after his pledge, creating a situation worth monitoring. The Tigers were a team to watch, and Florida State didn’t need another recruiting battle over a player already in the fold.

For the Seminoles, this is another important win on a board that has already seen some turbulence. Four-star defensive back Mekhi Williams, four-star linebacker Gregory Batson, and three-star cornerback DaYon Cooper all backed off their commitments in recent weeks, leaving Florida State focused on keeping its remaining class intact.

Johnson III gives the Seminoles another piece at linebacker, and the position group has been a busy one for Ernie Sims and company. Florida State has added three linebacker commitments since the beginning of the month.

The Harrison High School standout turned in a big junior season, finishing with 100 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. He also posted four games with 10 or more tackles. His biggest outing came in a 25-23 win over North Paulding High School on August 29, when he recorded 16 tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, and one forced fumble.

At 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, Johnson III is ranked by the 247Sports Composite Ratings as the No. 1202 overall prospect, the No. 107 linebacker, and the No. 135 player in Georgia in the 2027 class.

He joins a linebacker haul that also includes four-star Gernard Albright and three-star CJ Ohuabunwa.

Florida State now sits at 13 verbal commitments in #Tribe27, a group that ranks No. 55 nationally.

Florida State Faces Another Offensive Line Reckoning Under Mike Norvell

Florida State is staring at another full-scale offensive line reset as it builds toward the 2026 season, with almost every spot still up for grabs except left tackle. That alone makes the spring and summer evaluation period one of the most important stretches of Mike Norvells offseason, especially with the Seminoles trying to sort through a mix of returning players, transfers and freshmen before the line is asked to protect the offense for real.

Xavier Chaplin looks like the anchor on the edge, while Andre Otto has the inside track at left guard, but even that spot is being pushed hard as the staff sorts through competition. The larger picture is still unsettled, and the interior battles are where Florida State will learn whether its latest rebuild can come together quickly enough to avoid another year of uncertainty up front. One New Florida State Addition May Decide How Far Loucks Goes

Florida States first year under Luke Loucks was good enough to leave the Seminoles with a foundation, but not enough to keep them from reworking plenty of the roster. An 18-15 finish and a tie for seventh in the ACC showed progress, even as several seniors moved on and the staff had to rebuild around recruiting and the transfer portal. Marcis Ponder gives the front line a blue-chip piece, and Sebastian Rancik brings another layer of upside to a group that needs more size and production inside.

Rancik arrives after starting his college career at Colorado, and his past role there helps explain why Florida State views him as such an important part of the next step. He is expected to matter a great deal in the frontcourt and could be the player who settles the new-look interior if the Seminoles are going to push higher in Loucks second season. The roster has changed, the expectations are rising, and how quickly Rancik fits into that mix may end up telling the story of how far this team can go. [Read more 🡒]
