Florida State’s injury list got a little longer Thursday night as the Seminoles moved true freshman linebacker Noah LaVallee from questionable to out ahead of Saturday’s matchup with No. 3 Miami at Hard Rock Stadium.
LaVallee will miss his fourth straight game, though he was never expected to play a major role in this one. Even so, it adds to a Florida State availability picture that is already thin with less than 48 hours to go before the rivalry game in South Florida.
The Seminoles and Hurricanes first released their initial reports Wednesday night, when the two teams had a combined 14 players ruled out. On Thursday, both sides updated those lists again, and Florida State’s only change was the downgrade of LaVallee.
A few other names remain in the mix. Offensive lineman Paul Bowling, defensive lineman Darryll Desir and defensive back Zae Thomas are still listed as probable.
Thomas is trying to work his way back after sitting out the last three games, while Bowling and Desir were both on the field last week. Bowling, in particular, made his fourth straight start.
With LaVallee now officially out, Florida State is down at least nine players for Saturday night. Two players who could still shape the lineup, running back Samuel Singleton Jr. and linebacker Blake Nichelson, remain in recovery mode from injuries.
The trip itself has already been a problem area for Florida State. The Seminoles haven’t won a road game since November 25, 2023, and that drought is hanging over another difficult test away from Tallahassee.

Mike Norvell Debate Just Got Bigger Than Florida State Vs Miami
Florida State heads into Week 7 of the 2026 season with a matchup against No. 3 Miami carrying far more weight than bragging rights alone. The Seminoles have been uneven enough this year to keep the focus from staying on one Saturday, and the conversation around the program has drifted well beyond the immediate challenge on the field.
Mike Norvells future has become tied to bigger questions about how much the school is willing to invest around him, from roster spending to NIL support and the broader infrastructure needed to keep pace. If Florida State is going to make a case for continuity, it will need more than a strong showing against Miami. It will need the kind of commitment that makes keeping Norvell feel like a football decision instead of a financial one. [Read more 🡒]
Florida State May Have Found A Freshman Center It Needs Right Away
Florida States unofficial preseason stop in Birmingham offered an early look at how quickly a young roster can start to come together, and true freshman center Marcis Ponder made a strong first impression against Auburn. In the Seminoles 82-71 win on Oct. 14, Ponder led the way with a double-double, finishing with 13 points, 21 rebounds and three blocks while giving the frontcourt the kind of presence every coach wants to see in October.
Luke Loucks came away encouraged by what he saw from Ponder, pointing to the freshmans physicality and the progress he has already made since arriving on campus. For a Florida State team searching for reliable size and rim protection, that kind of early showing matters, especially when it comes from a player who is just beginning his college career. Florida State Faces A Brutal Test In This Miami Rivalry Matchup
A trip into rivalry week rarely needs any extra juice, but Miami has supplied plenty on the ground. The No. 3 Hurricanes have leaned hard into a rushing attack that averages 220 yards per game, and running back Mark Fletcher Jr. said the groups identity is built around physicality and the lessons it has taken from recent games. For Florida State, that is the kind of formula that can wear on a defense before the night is over.
Miami will try to carry that same edge into the matchup with the Seminoles, where establishing the run has a chance to shape everything else the Hurricanes want to do. If the ground game stays on schedule, Florida State could spend a long evening trying to slow a downhill offense that believes it has found its personality at exactly the right time. [Read more 🡒]
