Mike Norvell’s time at Florida State has swung from dream scenario to damage control in a hurry, and the numbers now hanging over the program are massive.
The Seminoles are 39-35 in seven seasons under Norvell and are in the middle of a rough 8-18 stretch across multiple seasons. That skid includes a 2-10 season in 2024 and a 5-7 finish in 2025, a stark drop from the 2023 team that went 13-0 in the regular season, won the ACC title and still got left out of the College Football Playoff.
Norvell’s stock has taken a serious hit along the way. He was once viewed as a possible successor to Nick Saban at Alabama and was widely regarded as one of the sport’s best young coaches.
Now, the 44-year-old is sitting on what might be the hottest seat in the country after a 27-24 loss to No. 19 SMU, a game in which he and the team were routinely booed at Doak Campbell Stadium.
Florida State is 1-1, and the schedule ahead does him no favors. The Seminoles head to Alabama next before games against Virginia, Louisville and Miami in October.
If FSU decides to make a change, the price tag would be staggering. Norvell would be owed approximately $46.7 million under the buyout terms in his contract, which the Tallahassee Democrat obtained. That figure would be the third-largest payout in college football history, behind only Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M and Brian Kelly at LSU.
Norvell’s 2024 extension runs through the 2031 season. His deal pays him $215,000 in base salary each year, while his supplemental income increases by $150,000 annually.
His yearly total compensation is listed as: 2026: $10.3 million
2027: $10.45 million 2028: $10.6 million
2029: $10.75 million 2030: $10.9 million
2031: $11.05 million
Florida State’s schedule still has plenty of landmines ahead, starting with Alabama on Sept. 19. The full slate also includes Central Arkansas, Virginia, Louisville, Miami, Clemson, Boston College, Pittsburgh, NC State and Florida.
