FSU Adds Veteran Coach to Staff With NFL and College Experience

Florida State turns the page in its secondary with the official addition of a veteran coach known for player development and deep Florida ties.

Florida State has officially added a new name to its coaching staff, bringing in veteran defensive backs coach Blue Adams to take over the Seminoles' cornerbacks room. The move was announced Saturday and marks a significant addition to Mike Norvell’s staff as FSU looks to build on its recent momentum.

Adams steps into the role previously held by Patrick Surtain Sr., who was dismissed earlier this month. And while coaching transitions can bring uncertainty, this hire brings a strong sense of continuity and credibility. Adams isn't just another name-he’s a coach with deep roots in the game and a proven track record of developing talent at both the collegiate and professional levels.

“Blue has great experience as a player and coach,” Norvell said in a statement released by the program. “He has a tremendous track record of evaluating and developing cornerbacks to play at an elite level.”

That’s not just coach-speak. Adams brings 16 years of coaching experience to Tallahassee, backed by a six-year NFL playing career that began after he was drafted following a standout run as a cornerback himself. That kind of experience matters-not just in the meeting room, but when it comes to earning the trust of players and helping them understand what it takes to play on Sundays.

He’s spent the last two seasons coaching the defensive backs at Michigan State, where he continued to build on a résumé that already included stops with the Miami Dolphins, South Florida, Oregon State, West Virginia, Purdue, and Northern Iowa. Over the course of his career, Adams has helped mold four NFL Draft picks, two All-Americans, and a whopping 24 all-conference selections. That’s not just longevity-that’s production.

For Adams, this move is more than just another job. It’s a return to familiar territory. A Miami native and Miami Senior High alum, he brings strong recruiting ties throughout the state of Florida-something that’s always a priority for any FSU staffer.

"It's both an honor and a privilege to have an opportunity to coach at Florida State University," Adams said. "I look forward to pouring into our players, coaching staff and the entire program. Go Noles!"

There’s a lot to like about this hire. Adams brings energy, experience, and a player-first approach that resonates in today’s game. And with Florida State continuing to chase championships, having a seasoned voice in the cornerbacks room could make a real difference-not just on the field, but in recruiting battles across the Southeast.

FSU’s secondary has been a key part of its recent success, and with Adams now in charge of the corners, the expectation is that the unit will continue to develop into one of the ACC’s best. With his background, connections, and track record, Adams looks like a strong fit for what Norvell is building in Tallahassee.
