The Houston Texans are bringing back a familiar face with the season drawing closer, signing former Florida State defensive lineman Mario Edwards Jr. to a one-year minimum deal, according to KPRC 2 Houston’s Aaron Wilson.
It’s a notable move for Edwards Jr., who was actually released by Houston earlier this year after failing a physical. He has been rehabbing from a torn pectoral that ended his 2025-26 campaign early, and the Texans did work him out before moving forward with the signing, a sign he’s moving in the right direction physically.

Edwards Jr. has already shown he can be a useful piece in Houston’s rotation. Last season, he played in 14 games and finished with 13 tackles, two tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. The year before that, in his first season with the Texans, he posted one of the best statistical stretches of his career: 31 tackles, three tackles for loss, three sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and two pass deflections.
This is only the third time Edwards Jr. has stayed with the same team for at least two seasons. He spent three years with the then-Oakland Raiders from 2015-17 and two seasons with the Chicago Bears from 2020-21. In between, he had shorter stints with the New York Giants, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, and Seattle Seahawks.
Across his NFL career, Edwards Jr. has appeared in 141 games and made 45 starts. He has 200 tackles, 33 tackles for loss, 26 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and 8 pass deflections. The Raiders selected him in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft.
Before the NFL, Edwards Jr. built his reputation at Florida State under Jimbo Fisher. He entered college as the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2012 class and a five-star prospect, then became a key starter on the defensive front during the Seminoles’ run to the National Championship and inaugural College Football Playoff selection in 2013-14.
Over three seasons in Tallahassee, Edwards Jr. compiled 95 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, eight sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, one interception, and seven pass deflections. He earned Third-Team All-ACC honors in 2013 and First-Team All-ACC recognition in 2014.
