Florida State’s defense has gone from problem to full-blown crisis, and Tony White is now taking the heat for it.
The Seminoles are 1-2, but the number that really hangs over this group is bigger than the record: over 1,000 yards allowed in the last two games. Florida State gave up 585 yards to SMU and then followed that up with 567 more against Alabama, a stretch that has put White’s passive approach under a harsh spotlight.
After the SMU loss, White pointed to the idea that his defense had played well for most of the night, saying, “Physical effort and for about 60 plays in there, they balled,” White said. “And there's nine plays that you want back, nine plays, 10 points, probably 250 yards.”
But the Alabama game made the issue even harder to defend. Florida State allowed 50 points and watched Alabama score on its final nine possessions. White said the problem this time came down to his own approach.
“You always start with me first; it’s my fault,” White said. “I should have stayed aggressive, should have stayed attacking.”
That admission only sharpened the criticism, especially because Florida State had two weeks to get ready for Alabama after the bye week. Instead of looking cleaner, the defense appeared even more vulnerable. The Seminoles led 21-6 with just under three minutes left in the second quarter, then trailed 26-21 at halftime.
White’s comments about not staying aggressive raised the obvious question: why not flip the switch when the game started slipping away? Florida State had chances to adjust, but the defense never found its footing.
The numbers are ugly all around. Florida State is now 116th in average points allowed per game at 31.1, 137th in average passing yards allowed at 340.7, 135th in total yards allowed at 490.3, and 132nd in average passing touchdowns allowed per game.
The back-to-back 500-yard games also made school history in the worst way. White’s defense became the first in Florida State’s 83-year history and nearly 900 games to allow consecutive 500-yard performances.
That’s why the frustration has spilled over so quickly. Brian Smith of Locked On Seminoles didn’t hold back, saying, “Tony White needs to be fired this week or next.
He needs to be fired. He’s awful,” Brian Smith of Locked On Seminoles said.
“They need change…. It’s like a semi can run through the offensive line and just pick out where they want to go.”
White is making $1.6 million a year to stop offenses, not explain away repeated breakdowns after the fact. And with Mike Norvell watching the same problems show up again and again, the pressure around Florida State’s defensive coordinator is only getting louder.

Ta'Shawn Poole turned in one of the more eye-catching nights on a Georgia high school field this fall, and it came at a good time for a player Florida State will want to keep tabs on. In Howards 49-43 regional win over Baldwin, Poole set a Georgia state record with six touchdown catches while piling up 245 receiving yards, a performance that put his name squarely on the radar.
The outburst also came with some grit behind it, because Howard was coming off losses to Valdosta and Perry before finally breaking through.
