Florida State’s path back to a bowl game is getting tight, but ESPN’s latest projections still have the Seminoles landing in the postseason - and in a familiar matchup for Mike Norvell.
After opening the 2026 season 1-2, Florida State needs five wins over its final nine games to keep the program from missing the postseason for a third straight year. That’s a tall ask.
The Seminoles are expected to be underdogs in six of those remaining contests, and the road only gets tougher with three more ranked opponents still ahead. Virginia, Clemson and Pittsburgh could also climb into the top 25.
If Florida State does pull off the turnaround, ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura sees the Seminoles heading to the Frisco Bowl. His projection sends FSU to The Star in Frisco, Texas, for a Wednesday, December 23 matchup at 9:00 p.m. ET against Memphis.
That pairing would put Norvell across from the program he once led. He coached Memphis from 2016-19 and built a strong run there, going 38-15, reaching four straight bowl games and posting two seasons with 10 or more wins, including a 12-1 finish in 2019. Memphis was also the first AAC program to reach three straight championship games under Norvell, and he won 71.7% of his games there, the best mark in school history.
The Tigers also have recent history with Florida State. The Seminoles own a 10-8-1 series edge overall, but Memphis won the most recent meeting in Tallahassee.
The Tigers were paid $1.3 million to make that 2024 trip to Doak Campbell Stadium and came away with a 20-12 upset that dropped Florida State to 0-3. The Seminoles finished that season 2-10.
Memphis comes into this season under first-year head coach Charles Huff and is off to a 3-1 start. The Tigers beat UNLV on the road and also pushed Boise State in Idaho. They’ve been to the postseason in 11 of the last 12 years.
Florida State’s next chance to get back on track comes Saturday, September 26, against Central Arkansas. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. ET on the ACC Network.

Ashton Daniels left Florida States opener with plenty of volume and even more to sort through after a 50-36 loss to Alabama, but Mike Norvell was quick to point out the positives as the Seminoles turn the page. Daniels threw for 377 yards and accounted for four total touchdowns, and even with three interceptions, Norvell highlighted the quarterbacks confidence and decision-making as reasons to believe the performance was more encouraging than the final score suggested.
Now the challenge shifts to what comes next, because Central Arkansas is the kind of opponent that can test a team in a different way. Florida State has the talent to move past the Alabama loss quickly, but it also has to show it can stay sharp and locked in against a lower-ranked team, especially with the season still in its early stages and the margin for a slow start already in the rearview mirror.
