Florida State’s recruiting class is starting to feel the pressure, and Connor Winn’s decision to back away from his commitment may only be the first sign of what could be coming next.
Winn, a 2027 class three-star tight end, made his move days after Florida State’s 34-7 win over Central Arkansas. He did not explain why he was stepping away, but the timing lands in the middle of rising uncertainty around Mike Norvell’s future with the Seminoles.
That uncertainty matters because many of Florida State’s 2027 commitments are tied closely to Norvell. The coach’s recruiting track record has been questioned before, but the current class still has a strong connection to him. If the Seminoles keep stumbling, especially with Virginia, Louisville, Miami, and Clemson still ahead, more recruits could start looking elsewhere.
One name to watch is DB Za'Kari Johnson. At this point, he is almost more of a live flip candidate than a settled pledge. The four-star athlete reclassified from the 2028 class into 2027 months ago before committing to Florida State as a potential piece of the future in the secondary.
Texas A&M, Miami, and Auburn have all tried to pull him away, and Johnson has not exactly shut the door on anyone. He had previously shown interest in Miami before a visit, though the Hurricanes’ crowded 2027 class may have slowed things down.
Florida State can also sell him early playing time, something not every interested program can match. Still, this weekend’s matchup with Virginia could be huge, since Johnson will be in Tallahassee.
If the Seminoles lay an egg against the Cavaliers, his commitment could be in real danger.
S Jernard Albright is another name that has to be on the watch list. Florida State worked hard in June to flip the three-star safety from South Carolina, and after the move he had been steady with the Seminoles. But other schools have started circling again.
South Carolina never disappeared from the picture, and Florida is now a serious concern too. Albright was in Gainesville for the Gators’ 52-28 win over No.
4 Ole Miss while Florida State was putting up 34 points against FCS Central Arkansas. He has already flipped once after deciding the grass would be greener, and with things beginning to dry up in Tallahassee, a move to the Gators looks more realistic.
Then there’s DL Sam LeJeune, a four-star defensive line commitment who once seemed locked in. A month ago, losing him would have felt far-fetched because of his connection to Norvell. That picture changes fast if Norvell is no longer in the mix, which is now a growing possibility.
LeJeune has also drawn attention for what he’s done on the field, and Mississippi State has been pushing hard for the in-state prospect. If things go sideways for Florida State, LeJeune may end up staying in Mississippi after all.

Florida State Has A Growing QB Concern At The Worst Time
Florida State does not need another distraction at quarterback, but the early part of the season has made that almost impossible to avoid. Around the sport, several other college passers are trying to settle in and find traction, with LaNorris Sellers, Jayden Maiava, Marcel Reed and Ashton Daniels all under the microscope as their teams work through uneven starts and look for cleaner play in the weeks ahead.
For the Seminoles, that broader quarterback turbulence only sharpens the focus on their own situation. Passing efficiency, turnovers and decision-making matter even more now, and the concern is whether Florida State can get steadier play before the schedule tightens further. There is still time for the position to settle, but the window is narrowing and the next stretch will say plenty about whether the Seminoles can keep this from becoming a bigger problem. Jameis Winstons Giants Role Just Got More Complicated
Jameis Winston is back in a starting quarterback role with the New York Giants after Jaxson Darts injury changed the depth chart, and for now he has the kind of opportunity he has been chasing. For a player whose NFL journey has always seemed to come with extra turns, the Giants latest move only adds another layer to a quarterback room that is suddenly much less settled than it looked a short time ago.
The twist came with New Yorks trade for JJ McCarthy, a move that gives the team another young arm to develop while Winston tries to steady the offense in the present. Winston has spoken confidently about handling the starting job and about helping McCarthy grow, but the timing makes this a tricky stretch for everyone involved, with the Giants balancing immediate needs against whatever they believe the next phase at quarterback should look like. Florida State Defense Just Created A Bigger Virginia Concern
Florida States defense is heading into the Virginia matchup with a clear message from coordinator Tony White: the emphasis wont be on chasing the quarterback. Even with Virginia showing balanced offensive production and strong play at the position, White said the Seminoles are looking elsewhere for their answers, which says plenty about how they want to shape this game on the back end and in the run fit.
White also admitted the bigger issue has been Florida States own uneven execution of defensive calls, a point Virginia can study now that his remarks were made publicly available. For a Cavaliers offense trying to build a plan, that kind of candor is useful information, especially when the Seminoles are signaling a different priority than the one opponents might expect.
