Florida State has a real recruiting headache on its hands with four-star athlete Za'Kari Johnson, and Miami may be the school making things even messier.
Johnson is scheduled to be at Hard Rock Stadium for the Hurricanes’ matchup with Florida A&M, and he didn’t exactly quiet the speculation beforehand. Ahead of the visit, he said Miami has been his “dream school,” a comment that immediately puts the Seminoles on alert.
Johnson has lined up all over the field for Miami Carol City, but college programs - Florida State included - view him as a secondary prospect. That makes him especially valuable, and it also makes his situation a little more dangerous for Mike Norvell’s staff. Florida State has done a strong job landing defensive back talent, but keeping those commitments intact has been a tougher task.
The Seminoles already know how quickly things can change. Blue-chip 2027 safety Mekhi Williams, Florida State’s longest-tenured commitment in that class, flipped to Wisconsin in June.
Now Johnson, who was essentially the next piece in line, is becoming the latest concern. If he ends up leaving for Miami, that would sting far more than losing a prospect to another conference.
Florida State’s 2027 class is being held together by a group of four-star pledges that includes Johnson, Ta’Shawn Poole, Sam LeJeune, Jernard Albright, Sean Green, and Jayden Miles. That group is carrying the class in the rankings, and it’s already sitting sixth in the ACC. Lose one of those names, and the whole picture starts to wobble.
The timing makes this even tougher for Florida State. Miami was one of the first schools to offer Johnson back in 2025, when he was still in the 2028 class, but the Hurricanes didn’t make a major push until after he reclassified into the Seminoles’ 2027 group. Norvell went hard after him, so a flip before signing day would be a rough look for the staff after all that effort.
Johnson is now emerging as one of the top flip targets in the 2027 cycle, and that’s a problem Florida State can’t afford right now. A move to Miami would not only hurt the Seminoles on the recruiting trail, it could also signal bigger trouble in the class.
Johnson has also hosted in College Station for the game against Missouri State, and he is now considering another trip to visit the Aggies.
