Florida State Suddenly Has A Backfield Concern Before Boston College

Florida State's running back situation grows more complex as injuries force Amari Thomas into a potentially pivotal role against Boston College.

Florida State’s running back situation may be tightening again, and Amari Thomas could be the next man forced into a bigger role.

Interim coach Rick Stockstill said wide receiver Devin Carter is much closer to returning and could see more action against Boston College, but the more pressing update centered on Tre Wisner. After leaving the Clemson game with an injury, Wisner has started working his way back, and Stockstill said he has been participating. Even so, his status for Boston College remains uncertain.

That uncertainty matters because Wisner is already the latest stopgap in a backfield that has been hammered by injuries and roster movement. He opened the season buried on the depth chart behind Ousmane Kromah and Samuel Singleton Jr., but injuries to both players and the dismissal of Gemari Sands pushed Wisner into the starting job.

Now Florida State is down to just two natural running backs for any kind of relief: Thomas and Zay Parks. Of the two, Thomas is the one the staff believes can handle a much larger workload, and he may be asked to carry the rushing attack if Wisner can’t go this weekend.

Even if Wisner is available, there’s no guarantee he’ll be at full strength. That opens the door for Thomas to see far more snaps and likely a heavier share of the carries against the Eagles.

Thomas logged the most action of his young college career against Clemson, though it amounted to just one carry in the loss. He was on the field some, but the ball didn’t come his way often. With nearly a full week of practice now ahead of him as the starter, that should change.

Florida State’s margin for error at running back is thin. With Kromah and Singleton out, the Seminoles were already leaning on a third-string option in Wisner. If Wisner can’t play, or even if he can only go at less than 100%, the pressure shifts squarely onto Thomas.

That’s especially notable because Thomas had already been elevated to the second-string role after Kromah’s injury. Florida State seemed cautious about getting him involved early against Clemson, likely because of how limited his practice reps had been. But the Wisner injury changes the equation fast.

What was supposed to be a chance to ease Thomas into the rotation against Clemson now looks like a trial by fire. Against Boston College, Florida State may need him ready whether the preparation has been ideal or not.

Florida State Fans Can Cross One More Name Off The Search List

The Florida State coaching search picked up another layer of clarity this week when Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz addressed the speculation head-on before his teams matchup with Texas. Rather than letting the rumor mill keep spinning, Drinkwitz said publicly that he is not a candidate for the Seminoles opening, while shifting the focus back to Missouris preparation and the challenge of slowing down Texas quarterback Arch Manning.

Drinkwitz has been at Missouri since 2020 and recently signed a six-year contract extension, two details that already made the fit look complicated for Florida State. Even so, his name had lingered in the conversation as the Seminoles sorted through possibilities, and his comments now remove one more prominent option from the list as the search continues to unfold. Florida State May Have Found Its Dan Lanning Style Hire

Florida States coaching search is starting to take on the shape of a familiar modern blueprint, with Glenn Schumann emerging as a name that fits the profile of a program looking for both continuity and edge. After Dan Lanning left Georgia for Oregon, Schumann stepped into the defensive coordinator role and helped guide a top-ranked unit during Georgias national championship run, adding another layer to a rsum already built on championship environments and high-level development.

For the Seminoles, the appeal goes beyond the scheme. Schumann has spent years helping mold NFL-caliber linebackers and has been part of multiple title teams at Alabama and Georgia, which gives him the kind of credibility programs lean on when they want a proven builder rather than a gamble. With Florida State searching for its next head coach after firing Mike Norvell, Schumann stands out as the sort of defensive-minded hire that could bring a clear identity from day one. [Read more 🡒]

Florida State's Coaching Search Just Hit A Brutal Reality Check

Florida States coaching search is already running into the kind of public resistance that tends to come with a high-profile opening. Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz addressed the speculation directly and said he is not interested in the Seminoles job, a notable development as Florida State works through a national search after firing Mike Norvell.

Even with a firm denial on the record, the situation is rarely that simple in a search of this magnitude. Florida State would still have to navigate the financial and contractual realities of making a hire like Drinkwitz, and the broader truth of coaching searches is that public comments do not always end the conversation.
