Florida State Still Waiting On A Defensive Boost Before Clemson

Blake Nichelson's potential return could help rejuvenate Florida State's ailing defense as they gear up for the final stretch of the 2026 season.

Florida State may be getting a timely defensive lift as Blake Nichelson edges closer to a return, even if the senior linebacker is not quite ready to be thrown back into the mix yet.

Mike Norvell addressed Nichelson’s status after practice on Monday, and the update pointed to progress without a full green light. Norvell said Nichelson is "progressing" but likely still would not be able to return to play just yet. With Clemson set to visit Tallahassee on October 31, the Seminoles may need a little more time before he is ready to go.

Nichelson has been out since the season opener against New Mexico State in Tallahassee, where he posted three total tackles before leaving with an injury. A return this season has never been ruled out, but so far he has remained sidelined.

That absence has been felt. Florida State has dealt with injuries all over the roster, and the linebacker group has been hit especially hard. The Seminoles have been forced to shuffle pieces around after Nichelson was expected to take another step forward and handle a larger role on defense this year.

His value to the defense is pretty clear from the numbers alone. Nichelson has piled up 115 total tackles since the 2023 season, making him one of the more established pieces on the unit. Losing him this early turned what looked like a chance for a breakout into another frustrating stop-start year.

Florida State’s depth issues have only made the problem more glaring. The secondary has been stretched thin, and other spots have gone without key players for much of the season. Getting Nichelson back would not solve everything, but it would give the linebackers a much-needed breather and hand the staff a veteran presence to help clean up some of the communication problems on defense.

Norvell also had a positive note on defensive back Jordan Crutchfield, who should be in line to see the playing field this week against Clemson. Crutchfield arrived with plenty of expectations as a freshman, but injuries have kept his first college season from getting off the ground the way Florida State had hoped.

For a team still searching for stability, any reinforcements matter. And if Nichelson and Crutchfield can both get back into the rotation, the Seminoles may finally be able to patch one of the weakest areas on the roster.

Mike Norvells Future Just Got A New Twist Florida State Fans Need

Several Power Four programs have already reshuffled their coaching staffs during the 2026 season, with Maryland, NC State and Baylor among the schools making changes, and Oregon also moving on from offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer. For Florida State, those openings matter because they only add more noise around Mike Norvell, who remains under scrutiny as the Seminoles continue to search for steadier results and a clearer direction.

Norvell is still guiding Florida State through the season, but the uncertainty around his tenure has not gone away, and the latest movement elsewhere only feeds the speculation. Oregons offensive coordinator vacancy is one more job to watch in a coaching market that keeps shifting, and for Seminoles fans, it leaves Norvells future in the middle of a conversation that is far from settled. FSU Found One Bright Spot In 2026 But A Costly Flaw Remains

For a Florida State team still searching for consistency in 2026, special teams has quietly been one of the steadier parts of the operation. Placekicker Gabe Panikowski has graded out well nationally, giving the Seminoles a reliable leg in a season where dependable execution matters, while linebacker AJ Cottrill and tight end Chase Loftin have chipped in to help make that phase of the game a real asset.

The one area not matching that standard is punting, and it has been hard to ignore. Daniel Hughes has lagged near the bottom in hang time among ACC and Power 4 players, leaving Florida State with a hidden problem in a spot that can swing field position and cover for mistakes elsewhere. It is a sharp contrast inside the same unit, and one the Seminoles will need to address if they want their special teams to stay a strength rather than a split decision. [Read more 🡒]

FSU Suddenly Has A Real Chance To Flip Its Season Vs Clemson

Florida State heads into its final bye week at 3-4, a place that leaves little margin for error if the Seminoles want to keep their season alive. With five games left, they need at least three wins just to get back into postseason position, and the next one on the schedule carries extra weight: Clemson comes to Tallahassee on Oct. 31 in a matchup that has felt lopsided for years, even as the current odds point the other way.

Sportsbooks have Florida State favored for this one, a notable shift for a program that has recently struggled to find consistency and has been stuck in a long losing streak against the Tigers. The timing makes it even more interesting, with the game set for a 7 p.m. ET kickoff on the ACC Network, and a chance for the Seminoles to use the bye to reset before a stretch that could decide whether this season becomes a rescue job or a missed opportunity.
