Florida State May Have Found A Frontcourt Force Sooner Than Expected

Florida State's rising star, Marcis Ponder, is embracing his critical role on a driven Seminoles squad aiming for a remarkable season.

Marcis Ponder arrived at Florida State with the kind of frame that turns heads right away. At 7-foot and 285 pounds, the freshman center wants to make his mark where size matters most: around the basket.

He also came in lighter than he used to be. Ponder shed 15 pounds to get himself into basketball shape after spending time playing football. That adjustment was no small thing for him.

“My transition to basketball was hard, said Ponder. "I was over 300 pounds. I was in shape for football, but not for basketball.”

Ponder’s game has already earned him a memorable nickname. Known as “Baby Shaq,” he picked up the label as a 14-year-old standout in AAU basketball, when he was already flashing the kind of dominance that made people notice.

For Ponder, trimming down was about more than looking ready. It was part of getting his conditioning right and making sure he could be counted on from the bench every night. Sometimes, just being available is half the battle.

That mindset fits the way he talks about his role. Ponder doesn’t sound like a player chasing flashy numbers. He sounds like someone who knows exactly what Florida State needs from him, and he has a clear target in mind.

“Long term goal for me would be ACC Defensive Player of the Year,” said Ponder. “I love defense, love getting rebounds, and I love blocking shots. That’s my job.”

His path to that point started in AAU, where he first learned the game and, by his own account, was mostly dunking everything on offense instead of taking traditional shots at the rim.

The early returns have been strong. In a recent preseason game against Auburn, Ponder posted 13 points and 21 rebounds in Florida State’s 82-71 win.

He’ll get his next chance to keep building that reputation on Monday, Nov. 2, when Florida State meets Florida A&M in Tampa, Florida.

Ponder also came to Tallahassee with a strong recruiting profile. He was ranked the No. 4 center in the 2026 class and the No. 3 overall player in Virginia. According to 247 Sports, he was also a Top 40 national prospect.

That matters for a Seminoles team trying to put the pieces back together. Luke Loucks’ squad is coming off an 18-15 season and a 10-8 mark in the ACC, and the roster has been rebuilt after several top players moved on to the NBA level.

Florida State’s schedule gives the team plenty of chances to measure itself, with key games coming against Florida on Nov. 10, Tennessee on Dec.

1, Texas A&M on Dec. 12 in Houston, Houston on Dec. 20 in Jacksonville, Syracuse on Dec. 29, North Carolina on Jan.

13, Duke on February 16 and Louisville on February 21.

Loucks and the Seminoles are aiming to take a bigger step this season with Ponder and a group of transfers in the mix. The goal is a deeper ACC tournament run and a spot in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

With Ponder anchoring the front line, Florida State believes it has a big body who understands the assignment and is ready to deliver it.

Florida State Fans Just Turned On Mike Norvell In Public

Florida States frustrations with the football program have spilled out of message boards and into a very public display ahead of the Clemson game, with fans organizing a GoFundMe to pay for an aircraft to fly a banner over campus reading FIRE MIKE NORVELL. It is the latest sign of how quickly the mood around the Seminoles has turned, with the fan base increasingly unhappy about the direction of the program under Mike Norvell and the silence they feel from the top.

The backdrop makes the anger louder. Norvell is tied to a contract extension with a buyout situation that has only added to the tension around the job, and the teams recent struggles have left supporters looking for some kind of accountability. Whether the banner actually flies or not, the message behind it is hard to miss, and it puts even more pressure on a situation that already feels like it is reaching a breaking point. [Read more 🡒]

Florida State Clemson Week Just Got Bigger Than The Game

Halloween at Doak Campbell Stadium is already set up to feel a little different. Florida States matchup with Clemson will come with themed events around the game, including a drone show and a Trunk or Treat, turning a late-October ACC showcase into more than just a football night for fans and families on campus.

The bigger news, though, may be what comes with the off-field backdrop. During the game, the program will honor Peter Warrick with an NFF College Football Hall of Fame On-Campus Salute, and president Richard McCullough also said the search for a new athletic director will begin soon. Between the celebration of one of the programs best-known stars and the start of a key leadership search, this week has taken on added weight well beyond Clemson arriving in Tallahassee. Florida State Could Get A Clemson Boost From One Intriguing Freshman

Florida State may have a little more receiving depth to work with heading into its next game, as Mike Norvell said true freshman wideout Devin Carter is expected to be available after returning to practice from an upper-body injury he suffered in the preseason. The former four-star recruit has been working his way back and has already flashed enough in practice to make him one of the more interesting young names on the roster.

How much Carter can actually contribute once the Seminoles get him on the field is still unclear, but his return adds another layer to a position group that can use every healthy option it can get. There is also some familiar Seminole blood in the mix, since Carter is the son of former Florida State All-American Dexter Carter, which only adds to the intrigue around his first chance to get involved.
