Florida State May Be Stuck With A Decision Fans Wont Love

Florida State faces a complex decision regarding Coach Mike Norvell's future, influenced by mounting financial issues and an unsettled athletic director position.

Florida State’s search for answers around Mike Norvell has hit a messy new phase, and the latest reporting suggests the Seminoles may be nowhere near a coaching change.

Pete Thamel of ESPN laid out the financial picture hanging over the program, and it is not pretty. Florida State is carrying more than $430 million in debt, and any move to move on from Norvell would come with a steep buyout. That kind of number makes a coaching change expensive enough on its own, but the bigger problem may be what still hasn’t happened at the top of the athletic department.

Nearly a month after firing Michael Alford, Florida State still has not conducted even a basic search for a new athletic director. That matters because without a new AD, the people who helped bring Norvell in are still the ones shaping the program’s direction. In other words, the same voices remain in the room.

That leaves Florida State stuck in a strange and uncomfortable spot. The school had previously been viewed as potentially holding off on a decision until after the Week 7 matchup against Miami, but that timeline no longer looks so certain. The financial burden is real, but it can also serve as a convenient explanation for why the Seminoles have not acted.

The delay is especially notable because the program is about to enter its fifth game of the season without a full-fledged athletic director. That is not the kind of setup that usually leads to sweeping change, and there is no evidence right now that Florida State is seriously pushing in that direction.

Alford’s firing initially looked like it could open the door for Norvell’s exit. Instead, it has had the opposite effect. Florida State’s administration has been supportive of Norvell, and the hope has reportedly been that a winning season would spare everyone from having to make the costly decision to buy him out.

But waiting carries its own price. The longer the school delays, the more damage Norvell could do in the meantime. And there is another wrinkle, too: a new athletic director would almost certainly want the chance to hire his own coach.

That is why Florida State may have painted itself into a corner. If things keep moving the way they are now, keeping Norvell through the 2027 season may be more realistic than anyone expected.

Given the state of the program, that would be a brutal outcome. Norvell has not been getting the job done, and if he stays, the transfer portal losses could be significant.

Florida State Just Took A Brutal Recruiting Hit Before Miami

Florida State has taken another jolt on the eve of one of its biggest games, dismissing freshman cornerback Chuck Kennon from the football team for conduct detrimental to the team, according to a university spokesman. Kennon had been the highest-rated recruit in Florida States 2026 class, and his removal also means he no longer appears on the official roster.

The timing only adds to the sting with Miami coming up next, because the Seminoles were already counting on that recruiting class to help shape the future of the secondary. Losing a player with Kennons profile this early doesnt just trim depth, it knocks down some of the optimism around a class that had been built to matter. [Read more 🡒]

FSU Just Lost A Highly Touted Young DB Under Alarming Circumstances

Florida State moved quickly after freshman defensive back Chauncey Alvoid Kennon was arrested on a series of serious charges, including aggravated fleeing to elude, false imprisonment and resisting an officer without violence. The Seminoles dismissed the young defender for conduct detrimental to the team, ending his brief run with the program just as he was supposed to be part of the future in the secondary.

Kennon remains in custody without bail, and the case is still at the allegation stage, not a conviction. Still, for a Florida State team trying to build stability and depth, losing a highly touted freshman under these circumstances is a jarring reminder of how quickly a promising roster spot can turn into an off-field issue. Florida State Enters Miami Game Facing A Gap Fans Cant Ignore

Since 2024, Florida State and Miami have gone in very different directions in the NIL and roster-building arms race, and the contrast is hard to miss heading into their matchup. Miami has landed higher-value deals for headline names such as Cam Ward and Carson Beck, while also riding the boost of a $200 million apparel agreement with Nike as its football program has surged into one of the sports more polished operations.

Florida State, meanwhile, has had a quieter approach on the spending front and has not matched Miamis recent success on the field. The Seminoles are still trying to close that gap under Mike Norvell, who signed an eight-year contract extension amid mixed results, and this game only sharpens the questions about how much roster investment now separates the two rivals.
