Florida State May Already Fear A Costly Coaching Miss

With Florida State's football program facing turbulent times under Mike Norvell, the missed opportunity of hiring successful coach James Franklin looms large over the Seminoles' future.

Florida State’s slide is making an old coaching decision look even rougher by the week.

The Seminoles are staring at a future that feels shaky at best, with Mike Norvell’s exit starting to look less like a possibility and more like a matter of timing. If and when that happens, the fallout figures to be immediate: transfers, decommitments, and a rebuild that could get ugly fast.

Norvell has had his moments in Tallahassee, but the overall picture is hard to ignore. The lack of results and the issues on both sides of the ball in 2026 point to a program that looks much closer to a reset than a return to the ACC Championship.

Florida State was never in an ideal spot financially, either. Norvell’s contract guaranteed him a massive payout, one the university would have a hard time covering, which left the school with limited options even as the season headed in the wrong direction. That doesn’t make the what-ifs sting any less.

One of those what-ifs was James Franklin. After his worst season at Penn State, Franklin was one of the biggest coaching names on the market last year, and there was even a sense that he would have been interested in Florida State if Norvell had been dismissed.

Some fans waved off the possibility, pointing to Norvell’s buyout and Franklin’s postseason record. But the bigger question is whether that really should have mattered.

Would Florida State fans have turned up their nose at a steady 10-2 season and a strong bowl trip? Given the inconsistency of the past few years, that kind of floor probably looks a lot better in hindsight.

Now Franklin’s Virginia Tech is making the regret even sharper. The Hokies are 4-0 and have an offense that’s already turned heads, pushing them into the conversation as one of the ACC’s sleepers behind Miami.

Make that 9 blue chips for James Franklin/Virginia Tech already in this class.

This commitment puts VT at #7 in the nation, passing Penn State.

As Virginia Tech’s recruiting stock keeps climbing, Florida State is heading the other way. The full consequences won’t really hit until the Seminoles do move on from their coach, but the direction of both programs is already clear.

Hindsight always makes these calls look obvious. Still, this one felt avoidable even then. Coaches like James Franklin don’t come around often, and Florida State may spend a long time wondering what might have happened if it had made a different choice.

Mike Norvell's Pressure Just Changed But Florida State Still Has Work Left

Mike Norvells early-season start at Florida State had the spotlight on his job security, but the temperature around his seat has shifted some after a 2-2 opening. USA Todays latest list no longer has Norvell sitting at the top of the coaching-pressure conversation, a notable change for a program that has spent plenty of time under the microscope already. It is a reminder that college footballs coaching carousel can turn quickly, and that reputation is often tied as much to what is happening elsewhere as it is to one teams own results.

For Florida State, though, the larger issue is not whether Norvell has moved down a list. The Seminoles still have work to do on the field, and the seasons next stretch will matter far more than any outside ranking of coaching angst. Around the country, Lincoln Riley at USC is drawing heavy scrutiny and Shane Beamer at South Carolina is facing a rough SEC start, which helps explain how quickly the national pressure gauge can shift. Florida States interest is simpler: keep improving, keep stacking wins, and make sure the story around Norvell is about football again. [Read more 🡒]

Virginia Faces Its First ACC Gut Check In Tallahassee

Virginias first true road test of the season lands in a place that should tell the Cavaliers plenty about themselves. The 3-1 start has been steady enough, and a recent home win kept them moving in the right direction, but taking that momentum into Tallahassee for an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup is a different kind of assignment.

Florida State enters at 2-2 after beating Central Arkansas, and both teams bring experienced quarterbacks and running backs into a game that figures to lean on veteran play. Virginia has taken the last two meetings, even though Florida State still owns the edge in the all-time series, which adds a little extra bite to a matchup already carrying early-season implications for both sides. Florida State Gets An Early Gut Check For Luke Loucks New Look Team

Florida States nonconference calendar now includes an early measuring stick, with a trip to face Tennessee in the SEC/ACC Mens Basketball Challenge on Dec. 1 in Knoxville. Its another notable test for Luke Loucks, who heads into his second year after guiding the Seminoles to an 18-15 finish last season, and it comes against a program that has been a steady force under Rick Barnes in his twelfth year on the job.

For Florida State, the matchup offers an immediate chance to see where this group stands against a physical, well-coached opponent with a proven rotation. Tennessee brings a lineup anchored by Jalen Haralson, Dai Dai Ames, Juke Hurts, Miles Rubin and center DeWayne Brown, and the Seminoles will learn plenty in a road environment that should reveal early whether Loucks new look team is ready for that kind of stage.
