Florida State Legend Ernie Sims Lands Major Role With Big Payday

Florida State doubles down on a hometown favorite as Ernie Sims steps into a key coaching role-backed by a notable new contract and rising recruiting influence.

Florida State just made it official: Ernie Sims is no longer just a familiar face around the program - he’s now a key figure in shaping its defensive future.

The former Seminole star has been promoted to full-time linebackers coach, shedding the “assistant” title he held previously. Head coach Mike Norvell made the move in January, and the university locked it in with a one-year deal finalized by athletic director Michael Alford. The contract sets Sims’ annual salary at $400,000, effective as of January 31.

But it’s not just about the paycheck - the deal includes some notable terms that reflect both the university’s commitment to Sims and the value they place on keeping him in garnet and gold.

If Sims decides to leave before January 31, 2027, he’ll owe the university 25% of his annual salary for any remaining time on the contract - unless he’s stepping into a bigger role elsewhere. That includes taking a head coaching job at another school, a coordinator position with primary play-calling duties, or a move to the NFL. In those cases, he can walk without penalty.

On the flip side, if Florida State opts to part ways with Sims without cause, the university will owe him 75% of whatever remains on the contract. That’s a solid safety net - and a sign of the school’s confidence in his continued impact.

There are also a few perks attached to the deal. Sims receives a $1,250 Nike Elite Allotment - a benefit tied to FSU’s long-standing partnership with Nike, which has outfitted the Seminoles since 1998. He also gets a $650 monthly car allowance and a university-paid cell phone, both standard benefits for full-time coaching staff.

But beyond the numbers, this move is about more than compensation. It’s about culture, continuity, and connection.

“Ernie is Florida State through-and-through,” Norvell said in a January release. “He grew up in Tallahassee, developed into one of the top recruits in the country and chose to stay home at Florida State.”

That local legacy matters - especially in recruiting. Sims has quickly made his presence felt on the trail, landing three-star linebacker Gregory Batson in November 2025, and following that up with a big win in South Florida: securing a commitment from Karon Maycock out of Miami, beating out the hometown Hurricanes in the process.

Recruits are responding to Sims’ energy and authenticity. He’s not just selling the program - he’s lived it. And for young players looking for someone who understands what it means to wear the Seminole logo, that kind of credibility goes a long way.

With this promotion, Florida State is doubling down on a coach who brings both pedigree and passion to the linebacker room. Sims has already proven he can connect with players and help bring talent to Tallahassee. Now, he has the title - and the backing - to keep building on that momentum.
