Florida State Leaves Camp Feeling Better But One Defensive Loss Looms

As Florida State wraps up fall camp, head coach Mike Norvell discusses key injuries and shares optimism about the team's readiness for the upcoming season.

Florida State is heading into the final stretch of fall camp with a better health report than it might have expected, and Mike Norvell said several key players are trending the right way as Week 0 approaches.

The biggest setback remains Karson Hobbs, whom Norvell made sure to address first. The coach said the cornerback’s ACL injury is a major loss for the Seminoles and made it clear he had big expectations for him before the setback.

"Losing Karson Hobbs was a big hit for us," Norvell said. "I was really excited about what I was expecting from him this year."

There was better news at cornerback with Nehemiah Chandler, who was limited for part of the week but is now back to full practice.

"Nehemiah has been somebody that's definitely gonna help this football team this year," Norvell said. "He was a little limited here for the last week, and he's just back into full practice as of yesterday."

Running back Quintrevion Wisner has also returned after missing time and got back on the field this week.

"He was able to get back in practice here this week," Norvell said. "I feel confident about what that'll look like here this next week."

Two more names moved ahead of the timeline Norvell had initially expected. Linebacker Mikai Gbayor and receiver Jayvan Boggs were both thought to be possible game-week decisions for the opener, but the coach said they now appear to be fully ready and cleared to participate.

"I'll tell you before game week, Mikai Gbayor and Javan Boggs, those guys are getting back, I truly was anticipating that being a game week decision in week one," Norvell said. "But I think both of those guys have shown that they're going to be fully, fully ready to go.

They got cleared to be able to participate. It's been good seeing that push.

So getting two guys we expect to be major contributors for us, getting them back a couple weeks early is a great job by our athletic training staff and by those guys in their rehab."

André Otto, who had been limited recently, is also back.

"He's back," Norvell said of his status.

For now, Norvell said the overall picture looks solid as camp winds down, though he expects a few more updates to come before the weekend is over.

"As a whole, I feel good about where we are," Norvell said. "Still a couple of things that we'll see as we get in throughout the course of this weekend, but I feel good overall."

Florida State Suddenly Has A Late Answer To Its CB Depth Issue

Florida States cornerback picture has gotten a little more complicated, and maybe a little more interesting, as the NCAAs new five-in-five eligibility rule continues to draw legal pushback. Class of 2022 athletes have been excluded under the policy, but temporary restraining orders in Colorado and Louisiana have reopened the door for some of those players to regain college eligibility and, in some cases, access the transfer portal.

For the Seminoles, that matters because roster decisions at defensive back are still in flux, and the pool of possible options could expand in a hurry if more players become eligible again. Florida State has been operating with uncertainty at corner, and this latest legal wrinkle adds another layer to what had already been a position group worth watching closely as the season approaches. Desirrio Riles Could Be Exactly What FSUs Offense Needs

Desirrio Riles arrived in Tallahassee with a background that already makes him stand out in Florida States offense. A former University Christian and East Carolina player, he changed positions from quarterback to tight end in college and now looks set to open the year as the Seminoles starter at that spot, bringing a skill set that can help in more than one way.

For Mike Norvell, the appeal is obvious. Riles has shown he can contribute as both a receiver and a blocker, and that kind of versatility gives Florida State another layer to work with in the middle of the field and in the run game. If he settles in quickly, he could become the kind of dependable presence the Seminoles have been looking for. [Read more 🡒]

Mike Norvell's Final Camp Read On FSU Carries One Clear Tension

With fall camp winding down, Mike Norvell is set to offer his final assessment of Florida State before the Seminoles turn their attention to the season opener. The head coach has spent August evaluating preseason practices, and his closing remarks should give a clearer sense of where the roster has made progress and where the work still needs to continue.

The timing matters because Florida State is already nearing game week, with New Mexico State coming to Doak Campbell Stadium to open the 2026 season on Aug. 29. By the time Norvell speaks, the camp grind will be over and the conversation will shift from evaluation to execution, with the Seminoles eager to see how their offseason work translates once the lights come on.
