Florida State Just Gave Its Interim Defense Some Needed Veteran Help

Veteran coach Paul Pasqualoni joins Florida State's staff as they navigate a midseason upheaval in leadership, poised to bolster their defense ahead of a crucial matchup against Boston College.

Florida State is leaning hard on experience as it tries to steady the ship, and the latest move on defense fits that theme perfectly.

A day after former longtime Middle Tennessee coach Rick Stockstill was elevated to interim coach, the Seminoles added another veteran voice to the staff. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported this morning that Paul Pasqualoni will come aboard as a defensive analyst, giving Florida State a coach with decades of seasoning and 246 games of head coaching experience.

Pasqualoni, now 77, built his reputation at Syracuse, where he spent 14 years and went 107-59-1. His track record in the ACC stands out even more: a 73-34 mark against conference opponents, along with four conference titles. In a season that has already taken a sharp turn, Florida State is clearly betting that people who have been through just about everything can help keep things from spiraling further.

That same logic was behind the Stockstill move on offense. He arrives with 224 games of head coaching experience, and the staff now has a similar kind of steady hand on the other side of the ball.

The Seminoles are also asking a lot of a relatively inexperienced play-caller. Legendary former Florida State linebacker Ernie Sims was promoted to interim defensive coordinator after Tony White was fired, and he remains linebackers coach as well. Sims will handle the play calling, even though he has only done it for three games before, all during the 2022 season at South Florida.

Sims has already acknowledged how little experience he has in that role, which helps explain why Florida State wanted another veteran in the room. Pasqualoni is not being brought in to take over the defense or run the show. His job is to support Sims and help give him a stronger footing as the Seminoles prepare for their Week 10 game against Boston College.

Pasqualoni’s most recent stops have been a long way from the spotlight. After leaving his role as the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive line coach, he became head coach at UConn in 2011.

That stint went poorly, with a 10-14 record over two seasons before he was dismissed after a 0-4 start in his third year. Since then, he has moved around and most recently worked with Avon Old Farms, a private school in Connecticut.

Florida State may not be looking for Pasqualoni to reinvent anything. What it needs is another seasoned coach who has seen enough football to help a young interim setup survive the moment.

FSU Leadership Search Just Got More Expensive Than Fans Expected

Florida State has turned to Parker Executive Search to help guide two of the most important hires in the athletic department, locking in a firm that will handle both the athletic director and head football coach searches. The school agreed to pay $175,000 in flat fees, plus reimbursable expenses, for a process that comes with a detailed scope of services, a payment schedule and some built-in protections for the university.

The contracts also give Florida State a measure of flexibility if the search needs to change course, with termination terms that vary depending on when the school backs out. There is also a notable safeguard in place if a hire does not stick, since Parker Executive Search will provide a free replacement search if that person leaves within 18 months, a clause that underscores how much is riding on getting these decisions right. Jameis Winston Just Took On A New Role In FSUs Reset

Jameis Winston has found a new way to stay tied to Florida State, this time off the field and inside the programs support structure. The former Heisman Trophy winner and current New York Giants quarterback has joined the Seminole Boosters Board of Directors, giving the school another prominent voice as it works through a broader reset around its football operation.

The move comes as Florida State sorts through major changes after firing Mike Norvell, with interim coach Rick Stockstill guiding the team into its next stretch of games. It also comes alongside a new partnership between the university and its NIL arm, Battles End, a sign the Seminoles are trying to tighten the alignment around the program while leaning on familiar faces who still carry weight with the fan base. Florida State Heads To BC Facing A Real Gut Check

Florida State heads into its road trip to Boston College with the kind of roster uncertainty that can turn a routine conference game into a test of resilience. Coach Rick Stockstill has made toughness and relentless effort the message this week, and it is easy to see why, with as many as 12 players potentially unavailable and key pieces like receiver Duce Robinson and running backs Ousmane Kromah and Sam Singleton Jr. dealing with injuries.

That leaves Ashton Daniels with even more on his plate, especially after a turnover-prone start that has put ball security front and center. The Seminoles will need him to get the ball to Jayvan Boggs, Michai Danzy and Jasen Lopez while the defense tries to make life difficult for Boston College quarterback Mason McKenzie, whose play is central to the Eagles chances.
