Florida State has moved on from Mike Norvell after Sunday’s blowout loss to Clemson, ending a tenure that had been hanging by a thread for more than a year.
Norvell exits with a 41-39 record at FSU, but the slide in recent seasons told the bigger story. Over the last three years, the Seminoles went 10-22, a stretch that left the program searching for answers long after the shine of 2023 had faded.
That 2023 season - a 13-1 run that once looked like the start of something bigger - helped keep Norvell in place, largely because of a buyout that sat near $50 million. But the patience was clearly running out, and the results on the field kept tightening the noose.
There was a brief moment when it looked like Florida State might steady itself. After a 38-7 win over Virginia, the Seminoles were 3-2 and had already played close games against Alabama and SMU. For a minute, it seemed possible Norvell could push the program back toward respectability and buy himself more time.
Instead, the next stretch unraveled fast. Florida State was blown out by Louisville, lost in overtime to Miami in a game that sparked controversy, and then took a decisive loss to Clemson on Saturday.
The backdrop to all of this was already shifting off the field. Just days earlier, Florida State president Richard McCullough sent a letter to supporters that didn’t mention Norvell directly, but made clear the school was reassessing its direction as it searched for a new athletic director.
“We have been evaluating every aspect of our athletics organization, including defining the role, responsibilities, and expectations for our next Athletics Director,” he wrote. “That work requires honest assessments, difficult conversations, and a realistic analysis of the immense changes and challenges in athletics over the past several years.
That work is nearing completion, which means we will be able to begin the search for a new Athletics Director soon. Our vision has not changed.
Florida State should compete for championships, develop exceptional student-athletes, attract outstanding coaches and personnel, and operate with the resources, leadership, and commitment necessary to succeed at the highest level of college athletics.
Now the Seminoles are looking for both a new head coach and a new athletic director, a major reset for a program that wants to get back to championship contention and stay relevant in a college sports landscape where the gap between the top conferences keeps widening.

Florida State Search May Be Telling Fans Something About Deion
Florida States coaching search is starting to sketch out the kind of profile the school may be after, and Deion Sanders appears to be moving off that board. The Seminoles are weighing a high-stakes hire, but the early read is that they want more than name recognition and recruiting buzz when they choose the next leader of the program.
Sanders run at Colorado has brought attention, but it has also come with plenty of questions about roster management and results in conference play. For Florida State, those issues seem to matter as much as the star power, along with the financial side of any potential deal, which suggests the search may be narrowing toward a very different type of candidate. Dabo Just Weighed In On FSU Fans Going After Mike Norvell
Florida States rough season has already put Mike Norvell under a harsh spotlight, and the frustration around the program spilled into the air above Doak Campbell Stadium when a banner calling for his firing flew overhead. The moment drew attention beyond Tallahassee, adding another layer to a season that has already featured plenty of noise around the Seminoles and the direction of the program.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney weighed in afterward, saying the scene was an embarrassment and that it crossed a line by turning football criticism into something more personal. He said losing games should not lead to attacks on a coach and his family, a reminder that the pressure around Florida State has become as much about the temperature of the conversation as it is about what happens on the field. FSU Opens Season With One Early Roster Concern In Focus
Florida State opens its second season under Luke Loucks on Monday in Tampa against Florida A&M, and the matchup brings a little more substance than the average early November tune-up. The Seminoles are trying to build on year one under Loucks, while Florida A&M arrives with its own momentum after a strong previous season under Charlie Ward and a roster that includes both returning pieces and new transfers.
For Florida State, the early focus is less about the opponent than about how the Seminoles sort out their playmaking spots as the season gets underway. Florida A&M has questions of its own in the frontcourt, but this game offers a first real look at how Loucks wants his group organized and who can handle the ball when the pressure starts to rise.
