Florida State is staking its 2026 season on Ashton Daniels, even if plenty of people outside Tallahassee aren’t buying it.
Mike Norvell moved quickly after spring practice ended and named Daniels the starting quarterback, making it clear the transfer is the guy he believes can steer the Seminoles back in the right direction. That choice comes with real weight. Florida State’s success next season, and Norvell’s future, may end up tied to whether Daniels can deliver.
Norvell has no shortage of confidence in his new quarterback.
“Ashton Daniels is a guy that can really do it all,” Norvell said. “he's been put in a lot of different situations that he's had to work through. You see somebody that's just continued to grow.”
Florida State wideout Duce Robinson is just as sold.
“He is everything you would want a quarterback to be, in my opinion,” Robinson said. “He is a professional in every sense of the word.”
But the national view is far less optimistic. The Seminoles are sitting at +3500 to win the ACC, which is ninth-best in the conference, and BetMGM has their win total at 6.5. Josh Pate went as far as saying he’s taking the under because of Daniels.
“Florida State under six and a half is a bet I am on.” Pate Said. “Not a ton of faith in Ashton Daniels at the quarterback position”
The skepticism doesn’t stop there. The Athletic placed Daniels No. 60 among 136 projected FBS starting quarterbacks, with 12 ACC quarterbacks ahead of him. On3 left him out of its preseason quarterback rankings entirely.
The numbers behind Daniels help explain why the doubts are so loud. He enters 2026 with a career completion rate of 60%, along with 24 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.
That leaves Florida State with a simple, high-stakes question heading into the season: is Norvell right about Daniels, or is the rest of the country?
If Daniels hits, Florida State can rewrite the story around the program. If he doesn’t, another losing season could push Norvell’s tenure in Tallahassee to the brink.
