Florida State Heads Into ACC Play With A Defensive Problem

As Florida State gears up for a tough conference schedule, their defensive woes threaten to derail aspirations, with alarming stats spotlighting the need for urgent improvement.

Florida State got a cleaner defensive showing against Central Arkansas, but one solid outing hasn’t changed the bigger picture. The Seminoles still head into ACC play carrying some ugly numbers, and through four games, the defense looks nothing like the kind of unit this program has built its reputation on.

The national rankings tell the story bluntly. Florida State sits No. 126 in total defense, giving up 429.8 yards per game. The pass defense has been even harder to ignore, with the Seminoles ranked No. 135 while allowing 290 passing yards per game.

The problems don’t stop there. FSU is surrendering 8.3 yards per pass attempt, and opponents have already converted 27 of 59 third downs. That 45.8% clip is the worst in the ACC.

The Seminoles are also tied for No. 90 in scoring defense at 25.25 points allowed per game, while the run defense is tied for No. 80 at 139.8 yards per game.

That’s a sharp drop from the best defenses Florida State has fielded in recent memory. The 2013 national championship team led the country in scoring defense and passing defense and finished third in total defense. More recently, Norvell’s 2022 team finished fourth nationally in passing defense and 15th in total defense.

Now the Seminoles are staring at a much tougher stretch, with seven straight conference games ahead. Their next test comes against Virginia, a team averaging 40.5 points and 447.3 yards per game.

Quarterback Beau Pribula has been rolling, too. He’s completed 76.7% of his throws for 793 yards, 11 touchdowns and one interception. Against Delaware last weekend, he went 24 of 28 for 279 yards and four scores, and he also ran for a touchdown.

Yes, that came against Delaware. But Florida State’s defensive numbers leave little margin for comfort anyway.

Holding Central Arkansas to seven points was a step in the right direction. It just didn’t come close to wiping away the issues. The Seminoles still need a defense they can trust, and with their first conference win still out of reach, Saturday against Virginia is about more than simply showing a little progress.

Jameis Winstons Giants Role Just Got More Complicated

Jameis Winston is back in a starting quarterback role for the New York Giants after an injury to Jaxson Dart opened the door, but his latest opportunity comes with a new layer of uncertainty. The Giants recently added JJ McCarthy in a trade, giving the quarterback room another young arm and making the depth chart more crowded just as Winston was settling back into the job.

Winston has sounded confident about handling the starters responsibility while also saying hes willing to help McCarthy develop, a tone that fits both the moment and the bigger picture in New York. For a player trying to steady his place under center, though, the addition of another quarterback with long-term value only adds another variable to a situation that already changed once and could keep changing. Florida State Defense Just Created A Bigger Virginia Concern

Florida States defensive preparation for Virginia sounds like it is leaning more toward discipline than disruption. Defensive coordinator Tony White said in a press conference that the Seminoles would not center their approach on pass rushing, even with Virginia bringing balanced offensive production and a quarterback who has played well. White also pointed to his own defenses inconsistency in executing calls, a sign that the emphasis inside the building is on getting the structure right first.

That kind of public comment can matter more than usual this week because it gives Virginia a clearer view of how Florida State is thinking about the matchup. With Whites remarks openly available, the Cavaliers have a little more to study as they sort through their own game plan, and the Seminoles now have to worry about whether the message they sent was as useful to the opponent as it was to their own locker room. Florida State Suddenly Has A Recruiting Problem It Cant Ignore

The recruiting picture around Florida State got a little shakier when 2027 three-star tight end Connor Winn backed away from his commitment without offering a reason. Even in a class cycle that is still early, a decommitment like that matters because it signals how quickly momentum can change when a program is trying to stabilize both on the field and in the living room.

Mike Norvells uncertain future only adds to the pressure, since recruits tend to watch coaching situations closely and revisit their choices when the noise gets louder. Winn may not be the last one to do it, either, with other pledges likely to keep an eye on how the Seminoles handle the next stretch of games and whether the staff remains intact. [Read more 🡒]
