Florida State gets a rare opening-night chance to reset the mood in Tallahassee, and the setup could hardly be softer. The Seminoles open Week 0 against New Mexico State on Saturday night in Doak Campbell Stadium, with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. ET on the CW.
The backdrop is impossible to ignore. Since Florida State was left out of the 2023 four-team College Football Playoff at 13-0, the program has gone 7-18.
The Seminoles haven’t won a road game since November 2023, and Mike Norvell posted his fourth losing record in six years last season. His job is on the line in 2026, and the fan base has been living somewhere between frustration and fury for a while now.
That makes this matchup feel less like a normal season opener and more like a pressure-release valve. New Mexico State went 4-8 last season in Tony Sanchez’s second year, and Florida State is expected to handle the Aggies comfortably even with some uncertainty of its own. Norvell is taking back over play-calling duties, and Ashton Daniels will make his first start as a Seminole as FSU’s third different transfer quarterback in as many years.
The betting market reflects the mismatch. Florida State is a massive favorite, with New Mexico State listed at +3500 on the moneyline and the Seminoles at -20000. The spread sits at Florida State -32.5, with the total at 52.5.
On paper, New Mexico State’s defense at least offers something unusual. The Aggies use a 3-3-5 look that can be awkward for plenty of offenses, but Florida State is not walking into something unfamiliar. FSU defensive coordinator Tony White runs a similar system, which means the Seminoles should be well prepared for the style they’ll see.
The bigger issue for New Mexico State is talent. The Aggies were 117th in net adjusted EPA/play last season, while Florida State finished 17th.
The gap in net success rate was also wide, with New Mexico State at No. 106 and FSU at No. 28.
That kind of separation usually shows up quickly, especially when a Power 4 roster gets to attack a weaker opponent.
Florida State also has a chance to lean on explosive playmakers if the offense settles in, even if the plan starts out more methodically than fans might prefer. New Mexico State’s own quarterback situation isn’t likely to change the equation much either, even with Furman transfer Trey Hedden taking over from Logan Fife and Adam Damante.
The comparison to New Mexico State’s game against Tennessee last season is another reminder of how steep the climb is. The Aggies lost that one 42-9, and while that Tennessee offense was more talented on paper than Florida State’s current group, the Seminoles still have enough of a talent edge to put up a big number if they want to.
And that may be part of the story here. With so much pressure around the program, Norvell has reason to keep pressing. The expectation is that Florida State keeps its foot down longer than most people would anticipate.
