Florida State defensive back Ja'Bril Rawls has landed on the Bednarik Award Watch List, adding another preseason honor to the Seminoles’ growing list of recognition.
The Maxwell Football Club gives the award to the outstanding defensive player in college football, and Rawls is now in the mix after a strong first season as a starter in 2025 before an injury cut his year short. The senior from Pensacola started seven games at cornerback and finished with 40 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, two pass breakups, one interception and one fumble recovery.
Rawls turned in his biggest performance at Virginia, where he piled up 11 tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss and one interception. That made him the first Seminole to post that stat line since 2005. He also had a notable day against Pitt, when all 10 of his tackles were solo, the first Florida State player to do that since 2017.
He added a seven-yard fumble return against Wake Forest and wrapped up the season at Clemson with a pass breakup and three tackles. Over his career, Rawls has totaled 58 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, three pass breakups, one interception and one fumble recovery.
The 32nd Chuck Bednarik Award, named for College and Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker and center Chuck Bednarik, will be announced during The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN on December 10.
Florida State opens the 2026 season on August 29 at 7:00 p.m. against New Mexico State at Doak Campbell Stadium.
