Florida State Awaits A Massive Defensive Back Recruiting Decision

As anticipation builds for Ta'Shawn Poole's commitment decision, the four-star safety's versatility and high-level skills have schools and fans eagerly awaiting his next move.

Macon (Ga.) Howard four-star safety Ta'Shawn Poole is ready to make his call Friday evening, with Florida State, Georgia and Tennessee in the mix for one of the Peach State’s top 2027 prospects.

Poole will announce his commitment live at 6 p.m. ET on the CBS Sports College Football YouTube Channel. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound defensive back is choosing from a finalist list that also included Clemson, after taking official visits to all four schools.

His visit run stretched across four weekends, beginning with Clemson and then moving to Tennessee, Florida State and Georgia from May 29th through June 19th.

Earlier this week, Poole discussed each of his finalists. Both 247Sports Crystal Ball picks currently point to Florida State.

The rankings paint the picture of just how highly regarded Poole is. 247Sports has him at No. 85 overall in the 2027 class, No. 4 among safeties and No. 6 in Georgia. The industry composite places him No. 64 nationally and No. 6 at his position.

Hudson Standish of 247Sports offered a strong evaluation of Poole earlier this month, calling him a “Three-phase impact playmaker set to become the first prospect from his high school (est. 2008) to sign at the Power Four level.”

Standish also described Poole as a “Rangy safety with ideal size hovering around 6-foot-1.5, 190 pounds with a +6 wingspan and ideal combine testing metrics.”

The evaluation highlighted his versatility, noting that he can line up over the slot, in the box or as a split-safety. It also pointed to his work in coverage, saying he handled himself well in one-on-one situations at the 2026 Under Armour All-America game and on the camp circuit, where he smothers receivers and tight ends in man coverage and shows the same playmaking instincts he flashed at wide receiver when the ball is in the air.

Standish added that Poole diagnoses plays quickly and closes ground fast to squeeze run lanes, though his aggressive style can sometimes lead to poor angles. He also said Poole still needs to keep improving his block evasion and block destruction when chasing the football.

In the deeper part of the field, Standish wrote that Poole has the range and anticipation to make plays as a split-safety. He noted that Poole reads the game well at the prep level and showed flashes in best-on-best settings, while also facing a significant jump in play speed at the next level.

The bottom line from that evaluation: Poole looks like a multi-year starter for a CFP contender with NFL Draft upside because of his mix of size, athleticism and coverage instincts.

Tom Herman Hire Says Something Bigger About Mike Norvell's Pressure

Florida States addition of Tom Herman is more than a familiar name landing on the staff. It is a clear sign Mike Norvell is looking for another voice around the program, one with head-coaching experience and a different perspective after Herman spent time around practice and the staff this summer. Herman arrives as an assistant to Norvell, bringing a rsum that includes previous stops at Houston, Texas and most recently Florida Atlantic in 2024.

The timing matters, too, because the Seminoles are about to be tested right away. They open with SMU on Labor Day night and then head to Alabama on Sept. 19, a stretch that can sharpen the focus on every move a coach makes. For Norvell, bringing in Herman adds support and experience, but it also underscores how much pressure is attached to this season before the first snap is even taken. [Read more 🡒]

Jimbo Fisher Just Reignited A Debate Florida State Fans Know Well

Jimbo Fisher has been out of the coaching grind long enough to settle into his role with the ACC Network, but the former Florida State head coach has not shut the door on a return. In an interview with The Athletic, Fisher said he still misses the parts of the job that once defined his days in Tallahassee and beyond, especially the relationships, recruiting, game-planning and competition that come with being in the middle of it all.

For Florida State fans, the bigger question is not whether Fisher still sounds like a coach, but where he might fit if the right opportunity ever surfaced. He said he would welcome another head-coaching chance, though he would also consider an offensive coordinator role in college or the NFL, leaving his future open-ended for now and keeping an old debate very much alive. One Florida State Freshman Is Turning 2026 Hype Into Real Pressure

Florida States offseason overhaul brought more than 60 new players into the program, and the bulk of that influx came from true freshmen. That kind of turnover always creates opportunity, but it also puts a spotlight on the newcomers who can handle the jump fastest. Among them, four-star wide receiver Jasen Lopez has quickly become one of the more intriguing names in the class, with enough buzz around him to suggest he is not just part of the long-term plan.

Lopez and fellow freshman Devin Carter are both in the mix to help right away, and the slot is one spot worth watching as preseason unfolds. Lopez has already drawn national attention as one of the ACCs top true freshmen to watch, and his path has been a little different than most after spending part of the spring tied up with the basketball team before settling in at receiver. His first chance to show what that looks like in a game setting is coming soon at Doak Campbell Stadium, where the pressure to turn promise into production will arrive almost immediately.
