Florida State’s running back room is already thin on numbers, and Tre Wisner’s latest absence is adding another layer of concern.
The former Texas back missed the Seminoles’ second and final scrimmage of preseason camp on Sunday night, and head coach Mike Norvell said afterward, “Tre was out tonight,” Norvell said. “Expecting to get him back here shortly.”
That marked the second straight scrimmage Wisner has sat out. He also missed last Tuesday’s work, and offensive coordinator Tim Harris Jr. said the issue sounded minor.
"We held him last night," Harris Jr. said last week. "He had something minor that we held him with, so he didn’t get any reps in that scrimmage. But prior to that, he’s been practicing really well, actually."
Florida State’s situation at the position makes every missed rep matter a little more. The Seminoles lost Roydell Williams, Caziah Holmes, Jaylin Lucas, Gavin Sawchuk, Kam Davis, and Jeremiah Johnson this offseason, then brought in only three additions: Wisner, former Florida Atlantic back Gemari Sands, and four-star recruit Amari Thomas.
Wisner was viewed as a top-100 transfer by both 247Sports and On3, which made his arrival a notable move for Florida State. He also steps into competition with homegrown backs Samuel Singleton Jr. and Ousmane Kromah, giving the Seminoles a top trio that has to carry a heavy load.
The concern is less about what Wisner can do and more about whether he can stay on the field. His 2025 season was already disrupted by injury, and his recent history explains why the Seminoles are paying close attention.
Last year at Texas, Wisner opened the season with a hamstring injury, missed the next three games, then reaggravated it after returning. That kept him from matching the level he reached in 2024.
When healthy, Wisner brings real production. Over three seasons at Texas, he played in 38 games, started 21, and finished with 369 carries for 1,734 yards and 9 touchdowns. He also caught 66 passes for 457 yards and added 2 more scores.
For Florida State, the bigger issue is depth. Beyond Wisner, Singleton Jr. and Kromah, there isn’t much margin for error. If Wisner keeps popping in and out of the lineup this fall, the Seminoles’ backfield may never quite hit its ceiling.
Florida State is scheduled to practice for the 11th time this preseason on Tuesday, though it remains unclear whether Wisner will be back on the field.
