Ethan Pritchard made his way back to Doak Campbell Stadium on Saturday, nearly a year after surviving a gunshot wound to the head, and the Florida State linebacker walked to the sidelines with the Seminoles before their season opener against New Mexico State.
As Pritchard led the team onto the field, the stadium answered with a full-throated war chant. The sophomore linebacker was shot in the back of the head while driving family members home from a family gathering, the victim of a case of mistaken identity.
Back in June, Pritchard told the Tallahassee Democrat he planned to walk out of the tunnel with his teammates in Week 0, and he followed through on that promise.
"I will tell you that I'm going to walk out there on the field, come first game," Pritchard said. "I feel like I already beat the hard part.
I beat death. This is just getting my body back."
Pritchard had emergency surgery in Tallahassee and spent weeks recovering before being moved to medical care in Jacksonville for additional rehabilitation. Saturday was not his first return to Doak; he was also present for Florida State’s win over Virginia Tech last season.
A video posted on social media by Orlando-based reporter Stewart Moore showed Pritchard walking on his own before the game while wearing a brace on his lower right leg. Over the summer, a Facebook post from Pritchard’s family drew widespread attention after it showed him taking several steps without his walker.
Those moments offered a glimpse of how far he has come, and his walk to the sidelines ahead of kickoff added another milestone to a recovery that has already been remarkable.
