Florida State’s season may end up being judged by Mike Norvell’s win total, but Saturday night belonged to Ethan Pritchard.
The Seminoles are staring at real pressure after back-to-back losing seasons, and Norvell needs at least six wins - probably more - to keep the temperature from rising even further in Tallahassee. Still, the most unforgettable moment of the year already arrived in Week 0, when Pritchard led the team onto the field against New Mexico State at Doak Campbell Stadium.
Pritchard’s presence carried a weight that had nothing to do with the scoreboard. The 2025 three-star linebacker from Seminole High School in Sanford, Florida, never made it onto the field as a true freshman last season. Instead, he spent most of that football season in the hospital after being shot in the back of the head on August 31, 2025, a day after Florida State’s season-opening win over Alabama, while driving his aunt home from a family event.
The recovery has been long and uncertain. Pritchard was hospitalized for six weeks, and at one point there was a real chance he would never walk or talk again. Nearly a year later, he can do both.
He returned to Bobby Bowden Field on Saturday night and stepped back into the spotlight at Doak Campbell, where he led his teammates out for the Week 0 matchup. It was a powerful image for a player who has fought his way back from an injury that nearly took everything from him.
Pritchard spent much of his recovery in Central Florida and has been working with physical therapist Alex Mendez. Just weeks ago, he was still using a walker. Now, he is walking mostly independently.
Florida State has had his back throughout the ordeal. Last season’s starting quarterback, Tommy Castellanos, posted a video of the whole team cheering for Pritchard as he was wheeled from Tallahassee Memorial Hospital on a stretcher last fall while being moved to Brook Rehabilitation in Jacksonville.
Whatever happened in the game, Pritchard’s return was the night’s defining moment.
