Ernie Sims Transforms FSU Linebackers with Hands-On Coaching Style

Ernie Sims, now linebacker coach at FSU, is instilling a strong defensive culture, enhancing performance, and embracing new talent to transform the team's fortunes.

Ernie Sims, a former All-American linebacker and Florida State legend, is stepping up to a pivotal role as the Seminoles' new linebacker coach. Known for his on-field prowess, Sims is now channeling his energy into mentoring the next generation of FSU linebackers, bringing his unique experience and passion to the practice field.

Sims, who spent two years as an assistant under Mike Norvell, is no stranger to the Seminoles' culture. His transition to linebacker coach marks a new chapter, where he's not just coaching from the sidelines but actively engaging with his players on the field.

"Being out there with the players is the closest I can get to playing again," Sims shares. "It allows me to connect with them personally, building both skill and culture."

This offseason has seen a significant revamp in the linebacker room, with the addition of transfers Chris Jones, Mikai Gbayor, and Chris Thomas, alongside promising freshmen Noah Lavallee, Izayia Williams, and Karon Maycock. Gbayor, familiar with defensive coordinator Tony White's system from Nebraska, and Jones, a standout from Southern Miss with impressive stats, are expected to make an immediate impact.

Sims is tasked with addressing the inconsistencies that plagued the linebacker group last season, particularly in pass coverage and gap assignments. His focus is on enhancing "ball production," a key priority during spring practices.

Sims is particularly excited about Jones, noting, "His intensity is off the charts. It reminds me a lot of myself."

This intensity is something Sims aims to instill across the board. Returners Omar Graham and Blake Nichelson are expected to foster competition and elevate the newcomers' game. Sims is dedicated to challenging his linebackers, preparing them to lead and excel when game day arrives at Doak Campbell Stadium.

"I’m here to fine-tune their skills and leadership," Sims emphasizes. "By gameday, I want them ready for anything, equipped to handle the toughest moments on the field." With Sims at the helm, the Seminoles' linebackers are gearing up for a season of growth and resilience.
