Florida State’s coaching search has already turned familiar names into talking points, and Brian Kelly just added himself to the mix.
The former LSU and Notre Dame head coach spoke Tuesday on College Sports Radio on SiriusXM and made it clear he’s open to the Florida State opening. Kelly pointed to the program’s profile, its history and the pull of coaching in Tallahassee.
"When you’re talking to an unemployed football coach, every job’s a great job, you know? But Florida State, look, I’ve got a great history with Florida State, great games," Kelly said. "I know what that’s like, the history and tradition of Florida State, playing in that state, and the fan base."
"So anytime you have an incredibly brand-driven, great tradition and history, there’s a want and desire to be part of somebody that has had that success and, certainly, leading that program, from anyone’s perspective, would be an honor and privilege," Kelly added.
The Seminoles are looking for their fourth head coach since 2017 after Willie Taggart and Mike Norvell couldn’t get the program back where it wants to be. With the Early Signing Period and transfer portal window approaching, Florida State has to move carefully as it sorts through options.
Jimbo Fisher is already known to be pushing hard behind the scenes to return to Tallahassee, and Kelly is another experienced name in the conversation.
Kelly’s résumé is long. He was fired by LSU last October after going 34-14 in Baton Rouge, including a pair of losses to Florida State at neutral sites. LSU won 10 games in each of his first two seasons, but never hit the level the school expected when it handed him a 10 year/$95 million contract.
Before LSU, Kelly spent 2010-21 at Notre Dame. He led the Fighting Irish to the 2012 BCS National Championship game, where they lost to Alabama 42-14.
Notre Dame later missed the four-team College Football Playoff in 2021, finishing at No. 5, and Kelly left for LSU after that season. He finished in South Bend with a 113-40 record and seven 10+ win campaigns.
There are worse places Florida State could land, but Kelly’s abrasive personality would not be a fit for this program.

Florida States Coaching Search Faces One Question Fans Cant Ignore
Florida States coaching search is unfolding against a financial backdrop that has drawn plenty of attention, but university officials say the numbers are not nearly as alarming as some outside reports have suggested. Chief Financial Officer Kyle Clark said the school carries $306 million in debt, most of it tied to stadium renovations, and he pointed out that figure is lower than what has been circulating elsewhere. The athletic departments budget has also climbed sharply over the past decade, rising from $76 million in 2014 to a projected $265 million for fiscal year 2027.
For Seminoles fans, the bigger question is whether all of that translates into real flexibility as the school pursues its next football coach. Interim athletic director Bruce Warwick has said the finances should not stand in the way of landing a top-tier hire or giving that coach the resources needed to compete. In other words, the money conversation is not about whether Florida State can participate in the market, but how aggressively it can move when the right candidate emerges. [Read more 🡒]
Florida State Heads To Boston College With A Roster Question They Can't Ignore
Florida State heads to Boston College this week with more than just a road game on its mind. The Seminoles are trying to snap the longest road losing streak in program history, and the trip comes with a different feel as well, since it will be their first game under an interim head coach. Both teams have already released injury reports, and there were no changes from the first report to the second, leaving the Seminoles to keep an eye on a few key names as they sort through the week.
Among the players Florida State is monitoring are running back Quintrevion Wisner and cornerback JaBril Rawls, two pieces whose availability could matter in a game that already carries plenty of pressure. With the injury picture holding steady for now, the focus shifts to how the Seminoles handle the setting, the new sideline leadership and the challenge of trying to break a streak that has hung over the program for too long. Jasen Lopez Just Landed A Huge Chance In Florida States Lost Season
Florida States season has turned into a long evaluation period, and the latest twist only deepens the sense that the final month is about more than wins and losses. At 3-5 with four games left and Mike Norvell no longer in charge, the Seminoles are trying to sort out who can still matter in the offense, especially after star receiver Duce Robinson was lost for the year to a knee injury that required surgery.
For freshman Jasen Lopez, the timing could hardly be better. A bigger role is suddenly available, and interim coach Rick Stockstill has already signaled confidence that Lopez can help the offense now, not just down the road. In a lost season, those are the kinds of chances that can reshape a players standing with the next staff and, just as important, with other programs watching closely. [Read more 🡒]
