Tampa Catholic gets a very different kind of rematch Friday night, and the contrast with last season could hardly be sharper.
A year ago, Clearwater Central Catholic had the game all but buried by halftime, rolling to a 49-7 win after building a 42-0 lead. Tampa Catholic finished that season 1-9. Now the Crusaders are 4-1 under coach Mike Gregory, while the Marauders arrive in Tampa unbeaten at 4-0 and ranked No. 24 in the latest High School On SI Florida Top 25.
That makes this more than just a chance for Tampa Catholic to see how far it has come. It is also a significant early marker in Class 2A District 6, where both teams already sit at 1-0 after opening district play with wins.
Tampa Catholic has spent much of this season looking like a completely different program. The Crusaders opened with four straight wins over Jefferson, St.
Petersburg Catholic, Nature Coast Tech and Berkeley Prep before falling 27-10 to Killian. The turnaround has been fueled by senior quarterback Chance Houston, who has been sharp and efficient through the four games reflected in MaxPreps’ individual stats.
He has completed 48 of 71 passes for 843 yards, 10 touchdowns and only one interception.
Houston has found a reliable top target in senior Mannie McKinney, who has 13 catches for 324 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 24.9 yards per reception. Eric “EJ” Douglas has been just as important in a versatile role, piling up 290 rushing yards and another 159 through the air.
That kind of balance has helped Tampa Catholic avoid the kinds of mistakes that can swing a game fast. Friday’s challenge is a lot tougher.
Clearwater Central Catholic has been disruptive on defense, stacking up 17 sacks and six interceptions in four games. Sophomore Na’im Jefferson leads the way with 3.5 sacks, while junior Kellan Jackson and senior Dicarieze Williams have three each. Senior Daveon Belhomme has already picked off three passes.
The bigger issue for Tampa Catholic, though, may be what CCC brings on offense. Senior quarterback Khayse Barrett has been dangerous in every phase.
He has completed 36 of 49 passes for 451 yards and four touchdowns, and he has carried 61 times for 461 yards and four more scores. In other words, he has rushed for 10 more yards than he has thrown for.
The Marauders have leaned hard into the run game overall, with 976 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns compared with 725 passing yards and six passing scores. When they do throw, junior Luke Wilson has been Barrett’s main option, catching 21 passes for 357 yards and two touchdowns.
Tampa Catholic’s defense has shown some playmaking ability of its own, with seven interceptions in the four games reflected in its MaxPreps stats, including three by senior Carl Jones Jr. But the Crusaders have only four sacks, and slowing Barrett plus a CCC ground attack averaging 244 rushing yards per game will be the biggest test of the night.
Friday also comes with both teams already in good position in the district standings. Tampa Catholic beat Berkeley Prep 24-14 in its opener, while Clearwater Central Catholic handled Calvary Christian 42-7 to get to 1-0 as well.
For Tampa Catholic, though, the backdrop matters just as much as the standings. Last year’s meeting was one-sided from the opening quarter.
This year, the Crusaders are unbeaten in district play, protecting the ball and making plays downfield. Friday night should tell the story of just how much has changed.

Panthers Still Have One Roster Squeeze To Solve Before Opening Night
The Panthers wrapped up their final training camp practices and are down to one last preseason tune-up against the Tampa Bay Lightning, with the opening-night roster picture still not fully settled.
