Paul Maurice Moved As Old Friends Reach Out During Milestone Night

Celebrating his 2,000th game milestone, Florida Panthers coach Paul Maurice reflects on the heartfelt support from old friends and colleagues that underscores his storied NHL career.

In a thrilling night of hockey, the Florida Panthers faced off against the Seattle Kraken, but the spotlight was on a significant milestone for their head coach, Paul Maurice. Maurice, now in his fourth year with the Panthers, reached an extraordinary achievement by coaching his 2,000th NHL game.

This accomplishment places him alongside the legendary Scotty Bowman, who holds the record with 2,141 games and 1,244 wins. Maurice, with 951 victories, ranks third all-time.

The Panthers honored Maurice with a special tribute during the first commercial break, showcasing a video that celebrated his journey with the team. Maurice humorously remarked that he hoped the game would continue without interruptions, allowing them to proceed without fanfare. "I was hoping we could run that thing right to the intermission," he joked, expressing his appreciation for the recognition.

Under Maurice's leadership, the Panthers have thrived, reaching the Stanley Cup Final in each of his first three seasons and clinching the championship twice. After Florida's thrilling 5-4 shootout victory over the Kraken, Maurice reflected on his time with the team and expressed gratitude for the support from the organization and fans.

"This place has been great. The fans have been great here," he said, acknowledging the heartfelt recognition.

The Panthers surprised Maurice with a tribute video on Monday, featuring messages from past and present colleagues. Nate Schmidt, who played under Maurice in Winnipeg and won the Cup with the Panthers, expressed his gratitude: "Appreciate everything you’ve done for me.

Hopefully I can see you around soon. Champs forever.

Cheers."

Kyle Okposo also praised Maurice's illustrious career, calling him "one of the best to ever do it." The Panthers shared a polished version of the tribute on social media, highlighting Maurice's impressive coaching journey.

Maurice's NHL coaching career began with the Hartford Whalers in 1995, and he later guided them through their transition to the Carolina Hurricanes. His coaching resume includes stints with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets before joining the Panthers in 2022. His journey also took him to the AHL and KHL, showcasing his diverse coaching experience.

Jim Rutherford, Hartford's GM when Maurice started, played a pivotal role in his career. Now with the Vancouver Canucks, Rutherford contributed to the tribute, acknowledging Maurice's remarkable journey from his early days in Hartford.

"Congratulations Paul. You have come a long way," Rutherford said, highlighting Maurice's respect and success in the hockey world.

Maurice shared that the messages from Rutherford and Paul Holmgren, who was instrumental early in his career, were particularly touching. Holmgren, who hired Maurice in 1995, encouraged him to seize the opportunity to coach, a decision that shaped his career.

Reflecting on his journey, Maurice also shared memories from players and friends, including a humorous nod to his long-time friend Pete DeBoer. Maurice recalled DeBoer's message about their early days together: "Lousy roommate, lousy landlord.

That’s what I thought he said. And he was right.

I was both."

As the Panthers prepare for their next game against the Minnesota Wild, Maurice's milestone serves as a testament to his enduring influence and success in the NHL.
