Sandis Vilmanis’ Saturday ended early, and the Florida Panthers are now waiting on a clearer picture.
The young Panthers forward left the game against the Washington Capitals after absorbing a hit from Tom Wilson, who was assessed a five-minute penalty and a game misconduct for boarding in the first period. Florida went on to drop the matinee 4-3, but the bigger concern was Vilmanis’ status after he was forced out with an undisclosed injury.
Vilmanis logged only 2:07 of ice time before heading to the dressing room. He blocked one shot and finished minus-1 before slowly skating off the ice after taking a moment to gather himself.
After the game, Panthers coach Paul Maurice said the team will need more information before it knows how long Vilmanis might be out.
“He’ll get looked at by another doctor tomorrow, but probably have to wait to get him back to see our guys (in Florida) before we have a real good idea,” Maurice told the reporters after the game.
When asked about the hit, Maurice kept his response pointed.
“I’ll leave that to the Department of Player Safety,” Maurice continued. “That’s their job.”
Wilson’s name is no stranger to that department. The Capitals veteran has been suspended six times in his career.
The injury comes at an awkward time for Vilmanis, who had just put together the best game of his young career. On Nov. 4 against the Chicago Blackhawks, the 22-year-old scored two goals and finished with four points.
Florida is back on the ice tomorrow against the Boston Bruins, though Maurice’s comments suggest Vilmanis is unlikely to be available.

Panthers Fans Can Dream On Kucherov But One Obstacle Looms
Nikita Kucherovs future in Tampa Bay has suddenly become one of the biggest talking points in the NHL, and naturally it has stirred up speculation closer to home for Florida fans. With contract extension talks with Lightning general manager Julian Brisebois having gone nowhere, the star wingers situation has shifted from routine offseason chatter to a genuine trade watch, with the Panthers quickly surfacing as a team worth monitoring.
For Florida, the appeal is obvious. A player of Kucherovs caliber would change the conversation around the roster in an instant, but the path to any deal is anything but simple. The in-state rivalry between the Panthers and Lightning looms over everything here, and it is the kind of obstacle that can make even the most intriguing idea feel far more complicated than it looks on paper. Panthers Have A Bigger Worry Than The Loss After Vilmanis Exit
Sandis Vilmanis night ended early after a hard hit from Tom Wilson in the game against Washington, leaving the Panthers to deal with more than just the result on the scoreboard. Wilson was assessed a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct before being ejected, while Vilmanis left with an undisclosed injury and did not return.
For Florida, the immediate concern now is less about the loss itself and more about how long it might be without Vilmanis. Head coach Paul Maurice said the forward will be further evaluated before the team has a clear read on his status, and that kind of uncertainty is never welcome this time of year when every lineup spot matters. Panthers Waste A Huge Night From The Tkachuks In Another Close Loss
The Panthers got a huge night from the Tkachuks and still came away empty-handed in a 4-3 home loss to the Capitals. Brady Tkachuk scored twice, Matthew Tkachuk set up three goals, and Florida had enough offensive punch to stay in the fight, but Washington kept finding answers at key moments and left Sunrise with the win.
Pierre-Luc Dubois and Aliaksei Protas each had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, while Jack St. Ivany scored his first NHL goal in the victory. Florida kept pressing late and made things uncomfortable down the stretch, but the margin never quite disappeared, leaving another close result to sort through for a team that could have used a different finish.
