The Florida Panthers are bringing back two familiar names, locking up forward Cole Schwindt and defenseman Alexander Petrovic on new two-year contracts Wednesday.
Schwindt’s deal comes even though Florida did not qualify him as a restricted free agent. The Panthers originally picked him in the third round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, and his path back to Sunrise has already included a few turns. He was part of the summer 2022 trade that sent Matthew Tkachuk to Florida, then the Panthers claimed him off waivers from the Vegas Golden Knights in October of last year.
Last season, Schwindt appeared in 29 games for Florida and put up five goals and seven points. He also showed enough in the faceoff circle to look like a strong option for the fourth line next season, taking a career-high 115 draws and winning 44.2% of them.
“Cole has developed into a well-rounded two-way forward who fits seamlessly with our team,” Panthers GM Bill Zito said in a statement released by the team. “He competes hard every night and we are pleased to have him back as a part of our strong forward group for the next two seasons.”
Petrovic is also back in the organization that drafted him. Florida selected the veteran blueliner in the second round of the 2010 NHL Draft, and he went on to spend parts of seven seasons with the Panthers before being traded to the Edmonton Oilers in December of 2018 for Chris Weidman and a third-round pick.
Since that deal, Petrovic has logged 60 NHL games and 341 AHL games over the last eight years. Fifty-four of those NHL appearances came last season with the Dallas Stars.
“Alex is a stalwart shutdown defenseman who brings size and depth to our blueline,” Zito said in a statement. “We are excited to welcome him back to our organization.”

Panthers Just Sent A Clear Free Agency Message With These Returns
The Panthers kept busy at the start of free agency by bringing back a familiar mix of youth, depth and experience, signing defenseman Alex Petrovic and forward Cole Schwindt to two-year contracts while adding forwards Sam Laferty and Lars Eller, plus defenseman Donavan Sebrango, on one-year deals. It was the kind of set of moves that says a lot about where Florida is trying to stay competitive, especially with Schwindt back in the organization after being claimed off waivers from Vegas and Petrovic returning for another run with the club.
Schwindts return stands out as more than a simple depth add, since he is back in Florida after a circuitous path through the league, while Petrovic is also getting another chance with the team that originally drafted him before he moved on. Around them, Eller brings the most established resume of the group and Sebrango gets another look after joining the Panthers on waivers last season, giving Florida a few different options as it rounds out the roster for the year ahead. Panthers Markstrom Trade Is Already Reshaping Another Contender
The ripple effects of the Jacob Markstrom deal are still being sorted out, and a fresh look at New Jerseys projected 2026-27 roster shows just how much one move can alter a contenders long-term plan. With current contracts and recent trades shaping the picture, the Devils lineup is still fluid, but the exercise makes clear how much the organization is trying to balance present ambition with future stability.
There are still plenty of moving parts beyond the crease, from the forward mix to the blue line, and health could further change the way those roles settle in. Jesper Boqvist is part of the projected mix again after his previous four-season run with the club, while recent surgery for Arseni Gritsyuk and the loss of Simon Nemec from the defensive depth chart underline how unfinished this roster still is heading into the next phase.
