Panthers Let Another Winnable Game Slip For A Frustrating Reason

Despite equalizing thrice, the Panthers faltered defensively and couldn't keep pace with the Sabres' offensive surge.

The Florida Panthers kept answering, but they could never quite catch Buffalo.

In a strange holiday matinee at KeyBank Center, the Panthers fell 5-3 to the Sabres in a game that featured multiple lead changes, two goalie changes, and enough special-teams action to define the afternoon. Florida tied the score three different times, only to watch Buffalo keep finding the next punch.

Buffalo struck first at 5:53 when Josh Doan jumped a Gustav Forsling pass and turned it into a clean give-and-go with Peyton Krebs before burying a wrister past Jacob Markström.

Florida responded at the 11-minute mark. Sandis Vilmanis forced the turnover, then fed Aaron Ekblad at the right point. Ekblad’s shot from distance created a rebound that Anton Lundell finished for his first goal of the season.

The Sabres reclaimed the lead 4:15 later on the power play. After moving the puck around the end boards, Buffalo worked it back to Rasmus Dahlin, who launched a rising slap shot over Markström with Dmitry Kulikov in the box for holding. Jack Quinn and Tage Thompson earned the assists.

Florida survived a delaying-the-game penalty to Radko Gudas late in the period and went to intermission down one.

The second period brought a new Panthers goalie, with Akira Schmid taking over, and another sequence of penalties. After Ekblad drew an interference call, Florida finally got its first power play at 5:55.

That turned quickly. Sam Reinhart, facing his old team, cashed in 31 seconds later by sweeping home the rebound of a Seth Jones blast for his first goal of the season. Matthew Tkachuk picked up the secondary assist, and Colten Ellis was pulled by Lindy Ruff after the goal.

Buffalo answered again at 11:25. Olen Zellweger and Owen Power helped spring Ryan McLeod, who beat Niko Mikkola to the puck and finished with Schmid sprawled on the ice.

Then came another Reinhart strike. At 13:41, he scored his second power-play goal of the period, sending the puck past a helpless Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen after Brady Tkachuk delivered a no-look, between-the-legs backhand pass off a Jones point shot. It took a while to sort out, but the play gave Tkachuk his first point as a Panther.

Florida could not build on that momentum. Ekblad’s second penalty of the day set up the eventual game-winner, as Noah Ostlund redirected a centering pass from Zach Benson at 7:15 of the third, with Quinn credited with the secondary assist.

Thompson finished it off later in the period, joining a rush and burying a cross-ice feed from Power, who had been sent into the Florida zone by Krebs.

The Panthers again found themselves close, then stranded. They finished 0-1 from third-period chances after battling back to even the score three times, and they dropped to NHL .500. Luukkonen stopped 13 of 14 shots before leaving the game, while Schmid allowed three goals on 21 shots in relief of Markström, who “tightened up” after the first period.

Florida now heads straight into another game tomorrow night against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

After scoring only one power-play goal over their first five games, the Panthers got two from Reinhart to keep pace. The downside was just as clear: the penalty kill gave those goals right back.

Jones collected his first two assists of the season on both power-play goals and logged 23:55 of ice time, along with four shots on goal and two hits.

Anton Lundell, Eetu Luostarinen and Sandis Vilmanis were the only Panthers to finish plus.

The line of Sam Bennett, Matthew Tkachuk and Brady Tkachuk all finished minus-two, and each Tkachuk brother had an assist.

Boko Imama created a chance for Garnet Hathaway in the third, but Luukkonen made the stop, leaving both fourth-liners still searching for their first point with their new club.

Panthers Get A Key Lineup Boost Before Tough Road Back To Back

Florida is heading into a demanding back-to-back road trip with a little more breathing room than it had after its first regulation loss of the season. The Panthers have been one of the leagues more steady five-on-five teams, and they also laid out their practice lines ahead of upcoming games against Buffalo and Columbus, a useful sign as the schedule tightens and the travel picks up.

Eetu Luostarinens status is the bigger relief for a club that briefly held its breath when he exited the previous game after taking a shot. He took part in practice and is expected to be available, which matters for a lineup that has leaned on its depth and stability early on. Florida opens the trip Monday in Buffalo and then turns right around for Tuesdays meeting in Columbus, so having Luostarinen trending in the right direction is a timely boost. [Read more 🡒]

Panthers-Sabres Took A Sudden Turn When Dahlin Left

Buffalo entered Mondays matinee against Florida already trying to steady a slow start, and the game took an even tougher turn when captain Rasmus Dahlin was forced out. The Sabres defenseman has opened the season with three points in four games, continuing to set the tone from the blue line after a strong prior campaign that helped push Buffalo into the playoffs and landed him third in Norris Trophy voting.

For a Sabres team sitting at 2-3-0 and seventh in the Atlantic Division, losing Dahlin in the middle of a game against one of the leagues more tested teams only adds to the pressure. Buffalo announced after he exited that he was dealing with an upper-body injury, leaving the club to sort through what his absence could mean if the issue lingers beyond this matchup. [Read more 🡒]

Panthers Finally Get A Look At Their Most Intriguing New Combo

Paul Maurice has been tinkering with a look that could give Florida a very different edge, sliding Matthew Tkachuk and Brady Tkachuk alongside Sam Bennett. The Panthers coach has spent enough time searching for the right combinations to know when something has a little juice to it, and this one has already shown a flash of the kind of energy Maurice has been after.

The three briefly surfaced together in a recent game, and even in that short stretch the line made itself felt in a way that fit Floridas personality. There is a natural edge when the Tkachuks are on the ice at the same time, and Maurice is now set to give the setup another run against Buffalo, with the Panthers curious to see whether a burst of physicality can turn into something more lasting.
