Panthers Just Saw A Costly Senators Concern Emerge

Senators goaltender Linus Ullmark's injury could pose a significant challenge to Ottawa's promising start following his early exit from the game against the Panthers.

Ottawa’s strong start took a worrying turn Wednesday night when Linus Ullmark exited the Senators’ game against the Florida Panthers in the third period with an apparent lower-body injury.

The trouble came just a few minutes into the final frame. After turning aside a shot from distance, Ullmark pushed to his left and then quickly collapsed into the butterfly position. He remained down for several minutes while a scuffle broke out between the benches, before eventually leaving the ice with help from the Senators’ training staff and Claude Giroux.

Before getting hurt, the Swedish goalie had handled 17 shots, stopping 16 of them across more than 43 minutes. The only puck that beat him came off the stick of former captain Brady Tkachuk. Samuel Ersson took over from there and was barely tested, making one save as Ottawa rolled to a 5-1 win.

The injury is another frustrating chapter for Senators fans who have seen Ullmark miss time since being acquired by Ottawa in 2024. He has played in more than half of the team’s games in each of his first two seasons, but injuries have repeatedly interrupted his stint, along with a personal leave of absence last season. He had already missed time this year after an injury against the Boston Bruins earlier this month kept him out for one game.

There was no immediate report on the severity of the injury, but if Ullmark is forced to miss an extended stretch, the Senators could be facing a problem. Through eight games, the 33-year-old has gone 7-1-0 with a 1.33 goals-against average and a .945 save percentage, numbers that have been a major reason behind Ottawa’s hot start.

Brady Tkachuks Ottawa Return Turned Ugly In A Game Jets Fans Noticed

Brady Tkachuks first return to Ottawa in a Panthers sweater had all the edge you would expect, and then some. The Senators were in control for most of the night in a 5-1 win, with Tim Stutzle, Claude Giroux, Shane Pinto, Warren Foegele and Stephen Halliday all finding the net while Florida could only answer once, on Tkachuks goal against his former team.

The atmosphere around Tkachuk never softened, and the game took another troubling turn for Florida when Linus Ullmark was forced out early in the third period. After making a pad save, he needed assistance to leave the ice, adding another layer of concern to a night that already felt heavy for the Panthers. [Read more 🡒]

Panthers Loss Put One Frustrating Question On Floridas Defense

The Panthers latest loss left the familiar concern hanging over the blue line, because the game turned into a test of depth, discipline and poise more than anything else. Jordan Spence logged nearly 19 minutes, chipped in two shots and two hits, and helped create a scoring chance, while Nikolas Matinpalo mixed in some useful work despite taking a high-sticking penalty and absorbing plenty of contact.

Carter Yakemchuk had a rougher night in his own end, even if he managed four blocks, and the kind of miscues that can tilt a tight game were impossible to ignore. In goal, Linus Ullmark was steady enough with his positioning and came up with key saves, while Samuel Ersson saw little action late, leaving Florida with one more reminder that the defense still has to tighten up when the pressure rises. Panthers Walk Into A Penguins Game Suddenly About Much More

The Penguins trip took an immediate turn before the hockey could even matter, with forward Ben Kindel facing a medical issue on the team charter flight and the plane heading back to Salt Lake City so he could be evaluated. Team personnel stayed with him as he was assessed, shifting attention away from the ice and toward a situation that carried far more weight than any standings wrinkle.

For a Pittsburgh club already dealing with a losing streak and uneven play in its own end, the off-ice concern only deepened the sense that nothing has come easily lately. The team has had enough trouble sorting out defense and goaltending, but in moments like this, the larger concern is simply getting a player the right care and waiting for the next update.
