The Florida Panthers are trying to steady themselves after another brutal early stretch on the injury front, and the latest news has only made that job harder.
Florida opened the 2025-26 season at 2-0-2, a start that suggests the on-ice product can still hold up. But the health picture is already flashing red again. Aleksander Barkov and Brad Marchand are both out with lower-body injuries, adding fresh uncertainty to a team that was expected to move past last year’s collapse.
That collapse was extreme. After winning the Stanley Cup in 2024 and 2025, the Panthers missed the postseason entirely last year in what the source described as a “nightmarish cavalcade of injuries.” Barkov, Sam Reinhart, Anton Lundell, Marchand, Seth Jones and Matthew Tkachuk all missed at least 18 games, with Barkov out for the full season and Tkachuk appearing in just 31 games.
Barkov’s situation is not expected to mirror last season’s full-year absence, but Marchand’s timeline is still unclear after he left Tuesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Kings. The Panthers have not gotten that answer yet, and that leaves them with more questions than comfort just a few games into the season.
On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff Live, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host Carter Hutton dug into what this means for Florida moving forward, especially with the club trying to re-establish itself as the favorite to win the Stanley Cup.
Yaremchuk pointed to the combination of age, physical style and the way injuries keep hitting this group.
“This is just another sign, this Marchand injury, the Barkov injury, health is never guaranteed, and for a team that’s up there when it comes to average age, I don’t want to say that injuries are expected, either. I know it can just be sort of a random thing, but they’re an old, veteran team who play a very hard-nosed style of hockey.
I think that can wear down on you, and they have a lot of guys who don’t play full seasons all that often. The Marchand injury sucks, and it’s got to be a little concerning for the Cats.”
Hutton called the situation “very concerning,” especially with Marchand getting hurt in the second game after offseason surgery. He also noted that Barkov was already expected to miss six to eight weeks.
“Yeah, very concerning, especially the second game after an offseason surgery, and then the announcement before that Barkov’s is going to be six to eight weeks. He came into the lineup the game before and added so much energy to it.
There is a factor there when I think about Brad Marchand, and again back to our Monday roundtable discussion with Cameron Gaunce… is Florida a lock to make the playoffs? It’s too early to say the word lock in general, because there’s another injury.
Where does that come from? Where does the depth pick up that slack?
I think it’s great that they found a way to win the game. That’s obviously an important factor is banking wins.
There’s going to be times where you’re going to have to lean on other guys… There’s going to be depth in your lineup; they need to find ways to create it without that veteran leadership in their lineup.”
For now, the Panthers are still winning enough to keep the picture from getting too bleak. But with Barkov and Marchand both sidelined, the margin for error is already shrinking.

Panthers Suddenly Have Much Less Reason To Chase Dylan Larkin
Aleksander Barkovs lower-body injury changes the calculus in Florida, even if it does not appear to change the long-term outlook. The Panthers captain is expected to miss six to eight weeks, but he will not need surgery, which at least keeps the door open for a cleaner return later in the season. In the short term, though, it leaves the Panthers without their top center and naturally invites a little roster-watching from the outside.
That is where the Dylan Larkin chatter had started to build, with the Detroit center back in the lineup after an injury and a trade request, then taking his share of boos before helping the Red Wings win. For Florida, the Barkov timeline makes a major center pursuit look far less pressing, and maybe far less realistic. The speculation had some traction because of the Panthers need, but with Barkov set to come back in a matter of weeks rather than months, the urgency around chasing a headline-grabbing fix has taken a noticeable hit. Panthers Suddenly Have Another Injury Concern Fans Feared
Floridas injury picture got a lot murkier against the Kings when Brad Marchand went down with a lower-body injury and had to be helped off the ice. It came in just his second game back after offseason surgery, a reminder that the Panthers were still easing him into the lineup and hoping to get another veteran presence back into the fold without issue.
The timing made the scene even more uneasy for a team already bracing for captain Aleksander Barkov to miss six-to-eight weeks with a lower-body injury. Marchands status now becomes another important storyline for a club trying to hold things together early in the season while key pieces are already on the shelf. [Read more 🡒]
Bruins Suddenly Have A Pavel Zacha Question They Cant Ignore
The Bruins attention may be on Pavel Zachas uncertain contract situation and the trade talk swirling around him, but the ripple effects reach well beyond Boston. Around the league, the market is still moving in the same cautious way, with Patrik Laine remaining unsigned as a free agent and David Perron also searching for a new home, while teams continue to weigh cap space, roster fit and timing. For the Florida Panthers, that broader churn matters because every move around a rival can shift the outlook in the Atlantic and alter how quickly teams try to solve their own lineup questions.
Florida already has enough on its plate with Aleksander Barkov expected to miss 6-8 weeks, and now it is also waiting for more clarity on Brad Marchands lower-body injury. The Panthers have not given a diagnosis or a timeline, leaving one of their most important late-season additions in limbo at a time when their margin for error is already thin. Between the uncertainty in Boston and the questions in Sunrise, the divisions picture is changing by the day, and the next update could carry real weight for the Panthers. [Read more 🡒]
