Panthers Have A Bigger Worry Than The Loss After Vilmanis Exit

The Florida Panthers' matchup against the Washington Capitals took a grim turn as forward Sandis Vilmanis exited with an undisclosed injury, leaving fans and team officials anxiously awaiting further updates.

Sandis Vilmanis left the Florida Panthers’ 4-3 loss to the Washington Capitals on Saturday afternoon after taking an undisclosed injury in the first period and did not return.

The play happened at Capital One Arena after Vilmanis cleared the puck out of the zone and was then sent into the boards by Capitals forward Tom Wilson. Vilmanis appeared to go into the boards head-first on the hit, was checked by a trainer, and then headed to the locker room.

Wilson was given five minutes for boarding and a game misconduct after a quick review by the officials, and he was ejected from the game. He has previously been suspended six times by the NHL Department of Player Safety.

“He’ll get looked at by another doctor tomorrow, but probably have to wait to get him back to see our guys [in Florida] before we have a real good idea,” Panthers head coach Paul Maurice told reporters after the game.

“That’s an unfortunate hit,” Panthers forward Cole Reinhardt said.

Maurice also made it clear the Panthers weren’t going to weigh in on any possible further punishment. “I’ll leave that to the Department of Player Safety,” Maurice said. “That’s their job.”

Vilmanis had just come off a career-high four-point night - 2G, 2A - in Florida’s 5-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday. He made his NHL debut and played in 19 games in 2025-26, and he has already set a new career high this season with seven points, including three goals and four assists.

Panthers Fans Can Dream On Kucherov But One Obstacle Looms

Nikita Kucherovs future in Tampa Bay has suddenly become one of the biggest talking points in the NHL, and naturally it has stirred up speculation closer to home for Florida fans. With contract extension talks with Lightning general manager Julian Brisebois having gone nowhere, the star wingers situation has shifted from routine offseason chatter to a genuine trade watch, with the Panthers quickly surfacing as a team worth monitoring.

For Florida, the appeal is obvious. A player of Kucherovs caliber would change the conversation around the roster in an instant, but the path to any deal is anything but simple. The in-state rivalry between the Panthers and Lightning looms over everything here, and it is the kind of obstacle that can make even the most intriguing idea feel far more complicated than it looks on paper. Panthers Suddenly Have A Tom Wilson Problem To Worry About

Sandis Vilmanis night ended early against Washington after he was injured on a hit from Tom Wilson, a sequence that immediately shifted attention from the scoreboard to the Panthers health. Wilson was assessed a five-minute penalty and a game misconduct for boarding, and Florida was left to sort through the fallout from a play that once again put one of the leagues most scrutinized hitters at the center of the conversation.

Paul Maurice said Vilmanis will be evaluated further, and the early expectation is that he will not be available for the next game. For Florida, the concern is not just one injured player, but the broader reality of facing a Capitals team with Wilson on the ice, given his long history of discipline issues with the Department of Player Safety. Panthers Waste A Huge Night From The Tkachuks In Another Close Loss

The Panthers got a huge night from the Tkachuks and still came away empty-handed in a 4-3 home loss to the Capitals. Brady Tkachuk scored twice, Matthew Tkachuk set up three goals, and Florida had enough offensive punch to stay in the fight, but Washington kept finding answers at key moments and left Sunrise with the win.

Pierre-Luc Dubois and Aliaksei Protas each had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, while Jack St. Ivany scored his first NHL goal in the victory. Florida kept pressing late and made things uncomfortable down the stretch, but the margin never quite disappeared, leaving another close result to sort through for a team that could have used a different finish.
