Panthers Have A Bigger Worry Than Another Frustrating OT Loss

The Florida Panthers suffered a heart-wrenching 4-3 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks, compounded by the concerning mid-game exit of Captain Sasha Barkov due to a knee injury.

The Florida Panthers dug out of a three-goal hole Thursday night, only to leave San Jose with a 4-3 overtime loss and a much bigger concern hanging over the result: captain Sasha Barkov exited in the second period after appearing to injure his left knee.

Barkov, who missed all of last season after reconstructive surgery on his right knee, went down while battling for the puck in the corner. His left knee appeared to buckle under him, and he did not return.

Florida was already trailing 2-0 when Barkov left, and the Sharks stretched it to 3-0 before the Panthers finally got going. Eetu Luostarinen broke through with 2:50 left in the second period, scoring Florida’s first power-play goal of the season after the team had gone 0-for-12.

That goal sparked a furious push in the third. Florida scored twice in a 17-second burst to erase the deficit and tie the game. Luostarinen cut it to 3-2 when he accidentally knocked in a Dmitry Kulikov shot, and Matthew Tkachuk followed almost immediately to pull the Panthers even.

The comeback, though, was not enough. With the game tied, Niko Mikkola was called for roughing with 17.9 seconds left, and Florida had to survive a 4-on-3 disadvantage in overtime. The penalty kill held, finishing the night 9-for-10, but the Sharks ended it when Will Smith set up Luca Cagnoni with 1:46 left in OT.

Florida did at least come away with a point and is now 1-0-1.

Smith was the central figure for San Jose, scoring twice in the second period before turning distributor on the winner. Macklin Celebrini also had a hand in the Sharks’ early surge, including the rush that led to Smith’s first goal of the night.

Mason Marchment added another wrinkle to the matchup, scoring his first goal with San Jose. He and his late father, Bryan, became the second father-son duo to score a goal for the Sharks, joining Ulf and Jonathan Dahlen. Marchment spent parts of two seasons with the Panthers from 2021-22.

The Panthers’ penalty kill had another mixed night after going 6-for-6 against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday. Florida killed 3-of-4 on Thursday.

How the goals came came in a game that swung hard in both directions:

Sharks 1, Panthers 0 (14:20 1st): Mason Marchment throws a shot through traffic from just outside the right circle.

Sharks 2, Panthers 0 (5:52 2nd SH): Macklin Celebrini brings the puck up on the rush and feeds Will Smith for the finisher.

Sharks 3, Panthers 0 (10:37 2nd PP): Smith gets his second of the night from down low in front of Akira Schmid.

Sharks 3, Panthers 1 (17:10 2nd PP): Eetu Luostarinen charges the net and scores off a big rebound.

Sharks 3, Panthers 2 (5:01 3rd): Dmitry Kulikov rips a shot from the point that comes off Luostarinen in the slot.

Panthers 3, Sharks 3 (5:18 3rd): Matthew Tkachuk takes his time, slides into the slot and picks his corner to tie things up.

Sharks 4, Panthers 3 (3:14 OT): Luca Cagnoni scores off a pass from Smith to thwart the full Florida comeback.

Panthers Face A Brutal Barkov Question After Early Season Scare

Aleksander Barkovs latest scare came during Floridas game against the San Jose Sharks, when the Panthers captain was forced to leave the ice after an apparent injury. For a player who already spent all of last season sidelined by right knee problems, the sight of Barkov exiting early was hard to ignore, especially after he had just worked his way back into action and even represented Finland at the 2026 IIHF World Championship.

Barkov is the kind of center around whom everything in Florida still turns. Drafted second overall in 2013, he has been a pillar of the franchise through its rise to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships, and any interruption to his season carries immediate weight for a team built to contend. The Panthers now have to wait and see how serious this latest issue is, with the bigger question hanging over a player whose value goes well beyond the box score. [Read more 🡒]

Panthers Suddenly Face A Barkov Concern They Feared Most

Floridas captain was forced out of Thursdays game against the San Jose Sharks after suffering a left leg injury, a troubling moment for a player the Panthers had only just welcomed back into the NHL lineup after a long recovery from reconstructive surgery. Sasha Barkov did not return, leaving the reigning champions to absorb another hit to the center of their identity at a time when his presence means so much on and off the ice.

Coach Paul Maurice said Barkov will be evaluated on Friday, and the club should have a clearer read on the situation by Friday afternoon. The encouraging part for Florida is that the injury is not tied to Barkovs previous right knee issue, but any setback involving the captain will be watched closely after he spent the prior season sidelined and then helped Finland to a gold medal at the IIHF World Championship. Panthers Showed Fight But One Troubling Sign Overshadowed Everything

The Panthers gave themselves a chance after falling behind by three, climbing all the way back to make a game of it before the night turned in overtime against San Jose. For a team that has spent plenty of time building its identity around resilience, there was at least some encouragement in the pushback, even if the result still came away as a 4-3 loss.

What lingered, though, was the sight of Aleksander Barkov leaving the game after an injury during play, a development that immediately put the focus somewhere far more important than the final score. Florida can absorb a hard loss in October, but anything that threatens its captain carries a very different kind of weight, especially with the Panthers still trying to sort out the impact of a night that mixed fight with concern.
