The Florida Panthers are about to get a familiar face back in net.
Head coach Paul Maurice said Monday that Jacob Markstrom will start against the Detroit Red Wings at home, returning from injured reserve after sitting out five games with an upper-body injury he picked up during a team practice.
Markstrom’s season has been a mixed one so far, but the numbers still show why Florida wants him back in the crease. Through six games, the 26-year-old has gone 3-1-1 with a 2.21 goals-against average and an .897 save percentage.
His absence forced the Panthers to lean heavily on 26-year-old Akira Schmid, who handled the bulk of the workload in goal. Schmid has five wins, which is tied for 13th in the NHL, along with a 2.86 goals-against average and an .889 save percentage in eight games.
The timing of Markstrom’s return matters, especially with the injury situation around the team still lingering. Sasha Barkov and Brad Marchand have also begun skating again, giving Florida a little more hope on the health front.
Markstrom last played in Florida’s 8-3 win over the Seattle Kraken on Oct. 17. Since then, the Panthers have had to manage without him, but he’ll now rejoin a team that is sitting fifth in the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division and riding a three-game winning streak.
This is Markstrom’s 17th NHL season and his second stint with the Panthers, the club that drafted him 31st overall in the second round of the 2008 NHL Draft. He began his NHL career in Florida, spent most of his prime years with the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames, then had a two-year run with the New Jersey Devils before coming back to the Panthers this season.
Over his NHL career, Markstrom has posted a .906 save percentage and a 2.73 goals-against average in 584 regular-season games.
After facing Detroit, Florida will turn around quickly and prepare for Wednesday’s cross-conference matchup with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Panthers Let Another Tight Atlantic Game Slip Away
Another tight Atlantic matchup got away from Florida on a night when the Panthers had enough offense to stay in it but not enough to close it out. Sam Reinhart and Sam Bennett both found the net for Florida, and Aaron Ekblad added a short-handed goal that gave the Panthers a needed spark, but the game stayed within reach deep into the third period.
Detroit finally separated itself with a quick burst early in the final frame, turning a one-goal game into a bigger problem for Florida. Daniil Tarasov backed that up with 23 saves, and the Panthers were left to sort through another loss in a division race where every missed chance seems to matter a little more. [Read more 🡒]
Carrollwood Days Perfect Season Still Leaves One Brutal Playoff Doubt
Carrollwood Day wrapped up a perfect regular season at 10-0, but the Patriots still find themselves in an uncomfortable spot as the Florida Open Division playoff picture tightens. The latest MaxPreps update has them just outside the projected eight-team field, with several familiar contenders clustered around the cutoff as the race for the final spots continues to shift.
Miami Central, Raines, Venice, Cardinal Newman and American Heritage are all part of the mix, and the margins are thin enough that one result can change the board in a hurry. Carrollwood Day has done everything asked of it on the field, including a road win over Cardinal Newman, but the final field will not be revealed until November 6, leaving one brutal question hanging over an otherwise spotless season.
