The Florida Panthers are getting closer to having two of their biggest names back in the mix.
Head coach Paul Maurice said Thursday that Sasha Barkov and Brad Marchand have both returned to the ice and are moving through their recoveries with a November return in sight. Barkov has been out since the second game of the season, when he suffered a lower-body injury in a road loss to the San Jose Sharks. Marchand, who also deals with a lower-body injury, has been sidelined since Florida’s loss in Anaheim.
Maurice said the first skate for both players came on Wednesday, and he likes where they stand.
“Back on the ice,” Maurice said. “Yesterday was their first time, so they are at schedule, and that’s a positive.”
The two forwards are on similar paths, though Marchand appears to be a little ahead of Barkov in the recovery process. Maurice said the expectation is still that both fall within the same general window.
“Both felt good,” Maurice said. “I think its four weeks for Sasha and probably three weeks for Brad from the day of injury, so I think were still on that six-to-eight (week) concept, but we’re happy with where they’re at.”
From here, the next step is staying around the team and ramping up gradually. Maurice said both players will travel with the Panthers when the team goes on the road next week, and they’ll be part of the day-to-day routine as they continue building back.
“Once they hit the ice they’ll travel with us exclusively, so they’re in here every day,” Maurice said. “They have an injury skate before (we practice), and then at some point they’ll move into the main group.”
Maurice also gave a positive read on Barkov’s status, saying the Panthers are encouraged by how he responded to skating.
“He skated today,” said Maruice. “I think we said 10 to 14 days, I think we’re optimistic that it’s closer to the 10 than 14, but it’ll all be feel on the ice for him, but he’s not far off.”
There was also a brief update on Jonah Gadjovich, though Maurice didn’t have anything major to report beyond continued progress.
“Nothing new, other than the last I’d heard, he was improving,” Maurice said. “So that’s a positive.”
Florida will be back on the ice Friday to open a three-game homestand against the Winnipeg Jets at Amerant Bank Arena. Puck drop in Sunrise is set for 7 p.m.

Panthers Crease Picture Just Got More Complicated Than It Looked
Akira Schmid is back in the crease for Florida against the Winnipeg Jets, a reminder that the Panthers are still sorting through their goaltending picture while Jacob Markstrom works his way back from an upper-body injury. Markstrom has been on injured reserve since Oct. 20, but he is skating with the team and his return window is starting to line up with some upcoming games, which keeps the situation fluid for a club that has had to lean on depth in net.
The matchup also brings a little extra intrigue on the other side, where Winnipeg is expected to turn to Nico Daws, recently acquired and in line for his debut. For Florida, the bigger question is how the crease settles once Markstrom is ready, especially with Schmid already getting extended looks in the meantime and the Panthers having to balance immediate results with the long view. Panthers Look More Dangerous Than Ever After Latest Rout of Jets
The Panthers kept rolling with a 5-2 win over the Jets, and the night had the kind of balance that makes Florida look increasingly hard to handle. Seth Jones chipped in with his second goal of the season and finished with multiple points, while the offense kept coming in waves behind him. It was the latest sign that this group is finding different ways to beat teams, not just leaning on one line or one matchup.
Anton Lundells hat trick was the headline, giving Florida its fifth such game of the season and underscoring how deep the attack has become. The Panthers have now won three straight, while Winnipeg has dropped eight in a row, and the contrast was hard to miss. For Florida, the bigger question is not whether it can score, but how many more nights like this it can stack before the rest of the East starts taking notice. [Read more 🡒]
Panthers Are Getting A Huge Boost From An Unexpected Scoring Source
Anton Lundells hat trick gave Florida the kind of finishing touch it has needed while key forwards are out, and Seth Jones kept driving the offense from the blue line in a 5-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets. Jones added a goal and two assists, continuing a remarkable October that has turned him into one of the Panthers most productive weapons at a time when the lineup is still missing Aleksander Barkov and Brad Marchand.
The broader takeaway for Florida is just how much offense it is getting from a source that was supposed to be more about stabilizing the back end. Jones has been piling up points while the Panthers wait for their injured forwards to work back into game shape, and the team has at least gotten encouraging signs with both players resuming skating. For now, though, the Panthers are leaning on unexpected scoring to keep the points coming. [Read more 🡒]
