Panthers Fans Still Debate Who Defined The Lost 2000s

Explore the standout talent and memorable performances of the Florida Panthers' 2000s All-Decade team as franchise icons are celebrated despite the absence of playoff appearances.

The Florida Panthers’ 2000s didn’t produce a single playoff berth, but the decade still had plenty of standout individual seasons. When you build an all-decade team strictly from one-year scoring peaks, the roster starts to tell a different story.

At forward, the Panthers’ best left wing of the decade was David Booth, and his 2008-09 season made the case. He played 72 games, scored 31 goals and added 29 assists for 60 points, while also posting 38 penalty minutes and a plus-10 rating. That 31-goal mark ranks 18th in franchise history for a single season and fifth among Panthers players in the 2000s.

The center spot belongs to Olli Jokinen, whose 2006-07 season was the kind of year that defined his time in Florida. He appeared in all 82 games and delivered 39 goals and 52 assists for 91 points.

That point total is eighth-best in team history, and his 39 goals sit eighth on the Panthers’ all-time single-season list. He also finished with 78 penalty minutes and a plus-18 rating.

On the right side, Pavel Bure gets the nod again, just as he did on the Panthers’ 1990s all-decade team. His 2000-01 season was pure fire: 82 games, 59 goals, 33 assists and 92 points.

That 59-goal output is the best single-season goal total in Panthers history, and his 92 points rank sixth all-time for one season. He also added 58 penalty minutes and finished minus-2.

The blue line features Jay Bouwmeester on the left and Mike Van Ryn on the right. Bouwmeester’s 2008-09 season brought 15 goals and 27 assists for 42 points, along with 68 penalty minutes and a minus-2 rating. For a defenseman, that kind of production stood out, and his 15 goals rank eighth among Panthers blueliners in a single season.

Van Ryn earned the right-handed defense spot thanks to his 2003-04 campaign, when he put up 13 goals and 24 assists for 37 points in 79 games. That 13-goal total was the highest of the decade for a Panthers right-handed defenseman. He also finished with 52 penalty minutes and a minus-16 rating.

In net, Roberto Luongo takes the job for his 2003-04 season. He played 72 games, the second-most in team history for a goalie in a single year, and posted a 2.43 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage. He also recorded seven shutouts and three assists, finishing with a 25-33-14 record.

A few other seasons were in the mix, including those from Bryan McCabe, Nathan Horton and Stephen Weiss. The 2000s group finished with 157 goals and 168 assists from the selected one-season performances, and the comparison with the Panthers’ other decades is still to come.

Leafs Offseason Is Already Getting Questioned With Bobrovsky Front And Center

Torontos offseason has drawn plenty of praise for the additions around the roster, with moves like Gavin McKenna, Nick Paul and Darren Raddysh helping give the front office some cover after a busy summer. But the bigger-picture evaluation has quickly shifted to whether the Maple Leafs actually solved their most important problems, especially after turning to Sergei Bobrovsky in goal and Jim Hiller behind the bench.

Bobrovskys reputation still carries weight, but the numbers attached to his recent play have fueled the skepticism, especially when stacked against what Dennis Hildeby brought before being moved out. Hiller brings a different kind of uncertainty, too, after his previous stop with the Kings ended with more questions than answers, leaving Toronto with a roster that may look deeper on paper while still inviting debate about whether the team improved where it mattered most.
