Oilers Linked to Major Goalie Move but One Name Stands Out

Despite rumors, the Oilers didn't pursue Bobrovsky at the trade deadline, leaving other NHL teams to explore options for the seasoned goalie.

The NHL trade deadline always brings a whirlwind of speculation, and this year was no different with the Edmonton Oilers in the spotlight. Many fans were buzzing about the possibility of the Oilers making a move for veteran goalie Sergei Bobrovsky.

With Tristan Jarry facing some challenges, it seemed like a logical step for GM Stan Bowman to at least consider the option. However, it looks like Edmonton might not have been in the running for the two-time Vezina Trophy winner after all.

Insider David Pagnotta shed light on the situation, revealing that the Carolina Hurricanes, Montreal Canadiens, and Vegas Golden Knights were the actual contenders in the Bobrovsky sweepstakes. Edmonton, it turns out, wasn't part of that conversation.

Pagnotta explained, "Carolina did explore it ahead of the trade deadline. They were one of the teams that had poked around on Sergei Bobrovsky, and there were some who believed there was a decent pathway to potentially making that happen.

Obviously, it didn’t. Montreal and Vegas were the other two teams in that mix."

Bobrovsky, at 37, is nearing the end of a hefty seven-year, $70 million contract he inked with the Panthers back in 2019. This season hasn't been his finest, posting a 25-20-1 record, a 3.00 goals-against average, and a .879 save percentage, despite four shutouts over 46 starts. These numbers suggest he's had a bit of a rough patch in the 2025-26 season.

Looking ahead, the Oilers might revisit the idea of acquiring Bobrovsky in the offseason when the landscape could be more favorable. However, Panthers GM Bill Zito's decision to hold onto Bobrovsky might lead to an extension before he hits free agency, even though contract talks have been bumpy.

For the Oilers, much will depend on how Connor Ingram and Tristan Jarry perform as the season progresses. Their play will likely dictate how aggressively Bowman pursues a goalie upgrade this summer.

With limited options in free agency, a trade might be the only viable path if Bobrovsky is no longer available. The goalie market is shaping up to be an intriguing storyline for Edmonton fans to watch.
